This is simply incredible. This has the ONLY recording ever of "Concierto como un divertimento for Cello and Orchestra". (If you don't believe me, go do a search on the internet, and just try to find one anywhere!) And what makes it unbelievable, it's one of his best concertos! How could that have happened? And there's even more reasons to get this CD - it's the most generous of all of the nine Naxos volumes, at 77+ minutes - the performances are top notch - and the recording is as good as you would ever hope for. ALL at a budget price!

I recently read that Rodrigo was a one-hit wonder and he only wrote for the guitar. In fact, Rodrigo dominated Spanish classical music during the latter part of the 20th century in much the same way as his mentor, Manuel de Falla, had throughout its first half. He wrote 11 concertos for various instruments. On this CD there are two cello concertos and a violin concerto.

The rhythm and texture of the music is very Spanish and traditionally tonal. Rodrigo was a conservative composer and this is friendly, if slightly old-fashioned music. The style is similar to Concierto de Aranjuez (1939) and its later companion-piece, the Fantasia para un gentilhombre, written for Andres Segovia. This CD has a Spanish cellist, orchestra, and conductor.

The Concierto de Estio, for Violin and orchestra was premiered in 1944. The Russian violinist, Mikhail Ovrutsky, is excellent. The Concerto in Modo Galante was Rodrigo's first cello concerto and it premiered in 1949. Concerierto como un divertimento, was commissioned and premiered by the British cellist Julian Lloyd Webber in 1982. The concerto and its creation was the subject of a British television program which included the complete first performance. The Spanish cellist Asier Polo does a fine job on this CD.

The Castille and Leon Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Max Bragado-Darman. They seem to understand this music and do a superb job.

Discovered more of Rodrigo than I thought possible. I bought the CD for the Rondino from the Concerto de estio (5:00) only to be surprised to the richness in the other Concertos.

Very good price, and I'm unable to tell whether it might be better at a higher price.
