The Romeros family--Celedonio, Celin, Pepe, and Angel--helped propel the status of the classical guitar repertoire during the '60s. The father and three sons had impeccable technique and an obvious love for the works of their Spanish homeland. On this disc, the Romeros clan perform memorable versions of two Rodrigo guitar concertos and three concertos from Vivaldi transcribed for guitar. These are gorgeous works, and the quartet--backed by the feathery touch of the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Victor Alessandro--is in top form. Rodrigo's Concierto Andaluz for Four Guitars and Orchestra was originally commissioned from the composer Celedonio Romero, and the ensemble provide a sensitive and lively reading of the folksy concerto. Vivaldi's works are an added bonus, especially the perennial Concerto in C for Mandolin and Orchestra, here adapted for the guitar artistry of Celedonio Romero. --Edward Garabedian

First I need to make clear that I'm reviewing the regular CD version of this disk. I haven't heard the SACD version, but feel that most of my remarks, except specifics about sound quality, will apply to it.

If you want to taste the guitar-playing delights offered up by the Romero family or if you want a fine historical record of this remarkable musical dynasty, then this is the CD for you! Jointly and severally, the Romeros do their stuff here: Celedonio (the pater familias), and his sons Ángel, Celín, and Pepe. To back them up the San Antonio Symphony, in one of its very earliest major-label recordings, does its damnedest under the baton of Victor Alessandro--with truly fine results.

To capture the event with the fullest possible fidelity available in 1967 the Mercury Records engineers employ the special setup of their "Living Presence" series: a three-channel, half-inch tape recorder fed by three individual Telefunken 201 microphones, augmented here by a fourth to reinforce the center channel. All the fuss clearly pays off in the marvelous sound quality of this recording.

To get the ball rolling Ángel delivers a truly excellent performance of Joaquín Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez." (Though Ángel subsequently focussed on conducting, it could not have been for lack of success in playing: his mastery of the guitar is manifest.)

Next the whole family join in on Rodrigo's "Concierto Andaluz for Four Guitars and Orchestra," a joyous, tuneful exhibition of how great four guitars and orchestra can sound together. This is not heavy "symphonic" fare, but music to celebrate the joys of life and lovely sounds.

Joaquin Rodrigo wrote one of his two concertos on this disc, the "Concerto Andaluz for 4 Guitars & Orchestra" especially for the Romero family of father Celedonio & 3 sons Celin, Pepe & Angel. There is more than this one recording by the Romeros of "Andaluz", but THIS is the one to own - thank you not only to the exceptional playing of the 4 Romeros, but also for the excellent conducting of Victor Alessandro and playing of the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra.
This is a vibrant composition done complete justice by this recording with all the artists taking part in its execution. This is a work to love and cherish for decades to come. Also included on the disc is the far more well known guitar work "Concerto de Aranjuez for (one) Guitar & Orchestra. Angel Romero is the soloist on this work, and is equally fiery and enjoyable.
The disc is rounded out by three compositions of Antonio Vivaldi (of "The Four Seasons" fame). All 3 of the Vivaldi compositions are transcriptions (since Vivaldi did not compose music for the guitar). The first transcription is from the Concerto for 4 Violins and Orchestra, followed by the Concerto in C for Mandolin & Orchestra (Celedonio is the soloist), and finally the Concerto in G for Two Mandolins & Orchestra (with Pepe & Celin the soloists).
This recording never gets old for me. I've owned it on vinyl (before the advent of compact discs) and this is my 2nd cd of this recording. I enjoy this and continue to this day to discover "new" nuances which I have either forgotten or not paid attention to previously.
This is in my view a disc for the ages of which I will never tire. If you are unfamiliar with especially the Concerto Andaluz, buy this disc (on amazon) and enjoy it! Nothing less than an absolute 10/10 will do justice to this magnificent Romero Family and the compositions they present on this disc. Highly, highly recommended!

What can I say? The paragons of classical guitar. This is an older album, but hit has not lost its charm and beauty. The Romeros are a musical institution. I just hope that future generations of this talented family continue to produce great works such as this. I highly recommend it.

As far as I am concerned, this is without doubt the finest performance of the Concerto de Aranjuez I have ever heard. Both Angel Romero and the orchestra play with incredible feeling. The tempos and dynamics are just perfect. The climax of the second movement gives me chills every time I hear it. I have to confess that this is also the first version of the piece I ever heard, back on LP when it was originally released. So that may color my judgement. But over the years I heard many other performances and always felt they lacked something, even though I had not heard the original LPs in many years. When I was finally able to obtain this on CD (after many years of looking), my reaction was the same - it is an inspiring performance.

I have never heard another version of the Concerto Andaluz so have nothing to compare it to, but I do love the piece and it is a great performance.

As to the Vivaldi concertos, they also sound great, though I have heard other performances of these pieces that are also excellent.
