Rogue Code: A Jeff Aiken Novel (Jeff Aiken Series, 3) Hardcover – May 20, 2014

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 493 ratings

Michael Lewis' Flash Boys revealed how high-frequency trading has created a ruthless breed of traders capable of winning whichever way the market turns. In Rogue Code, Mark Russinovich takes it one step further to show how their grip on high finance makes the stock market vulnerable to hackers who could bring about worldwide financial collapse.

Cyber security expert Jeff Aiken knows that no computer system is completely secure. When he's called to investigate a possible breach at the New York Stock Exchange, he discovers not only that their system has been infiltrated but that someone on the inside knows. Yet for some reason, they have allowed the hackers to steal millions of dollars from accounts without trying to stop the theft.

When Jeff uncovers the crime, the NYSE suddenly turns on him. Accused of grand larceny, he must find and expose the criminals behind the theft, not just to prove his innocence but to stop a multibillion-dollar heist that could upend the U.S. economy. Unwilling to heed Jeff's warnings, the NYSE plans to continue with a major IPO using a new, untested system, one that might be susceptible both to hackers and to ruthless high-frequency traders willing to take any risk to turn a profit.

Now Jeff Aiken must unearth the truth on his own, following the thread to the back alleys of Rio de Janeiro to take on one of the world's most ruthless cartels.

Praised for his combination of real-world technology and quick-paced action, with
Rogue Code Mark Russinovich delivers an intense thriller about a cyber threat that seems all too possible---and the Wall Street traders who might allow it to happen.

Includes a foreword by Haim Bodek, author of
The Problem of HFT: Collected Writings on High Frequency Trading & Stock Market Structure Reform.

The best in the series so far. Like the Zero Day and Trojan Horse, Rogue Code is a solid techno-thriller that keeps the technology realistic. No James Bond or Dan Brown nonsense here. This particular novel is set in the realm of high frequency trading (HFT).

Russinovich started out as a technical writer but he has developed real chops as a novelist. The writing in Rogue Code is better than in Trojan Horse which in turn was an improvement over Zero Day. I recommend the whole series, including the short story.

Mark always spins a good yarn, and the technology is always credible and even prescient. Like his previous two Jeff Aiken books, he pacing is good, the characters are good, and the plot draws the reader in. In this story Mark sometimes gets a little bit too much in exposition to explain HFT and set up his story. It could have been done through developing the plot a little more. But that is the price we readers pay in getting a story that is real and realistic and deals with an arcane subject like black pools and the like. Overall, a good read, compelling and well done. And with nice character development across the three books.

I know of no other author who can combine supreme geekdom with heart-pounding suspense and thrilling adventure. His characters are computer nerds who combat esoteric evils in cyberspace and engage in gun fights. Stopping a massive organized crime exploitation of an IPO is the main thrust of the story, but the role and methods of high frequency trading plays significantly into the book. I do not want to give too much to say, except that yet again Mark has produced a superb read. In fact, it may just be his best yet. You will not be disappointed!

I work as a professional software security researcher and have read (at least partially) a number of Mr. Russinovich's non-fiction works. After his first two novels, I was looking forward to what this one had in store. Although, judged by itself, it is a fairly good read, I have to say this is my least favorite of the three. Because of my academic/professional background, I followed his previous novels without any difficulty understanding even the intricately detailed parts. That has not been the case with this one. I have a high-level understanding of finance and the stock market: I can give an amateurish explanation of how credit default swaps and collateralized debt obligations work. The author also does a decent job of explaining how high-frequency trading - the major topic of this novel - operates. However, without a deeper knowledge of how these algorithms affect stock prices in the span of microseconds, you can't really appreciate how the villains exploit them to amass billions of dollars. The author does supply a bibliography for those interested in delving into HFT, but I didn't sign up for a course in Wall Street economics when I purchased this book.

The perfect target audience for this novel is those with a fundamental understanding of both software security and the inner workings of the modern stock market - probably a very small intersect on that Venn diagram. For those of you with an understanding of neither, I suggest you look elsewhere for your casual literary entertainment.

Five stars because I just couldn't stop reading the story. Mark ,and Jeff ;), have done it again. The story kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoy the suspenseful story arc in each of the Jeff Aiken series and the accurate technical detail is a plus for me. This time the story included a lot of interesting information about the stock market and HFTs. I've been an IT geek for several decades now (since the mid 60s) and I also enjoy Mark's non-fiction writing.

Besides being a great technical writer, Mark Russinovich has become one of my favorite writers w/ the Jeff Aiken series. I've read all of them now & eagerly waiting for the next. Even though the series is about computers & hackers, which I love, there's a great balance in everything. A lot of suspense & action. Highly recommend!

The only thing I'll say is that it's worth reading if you have time to kill.

Overall, I liked the fact that the author took the time to develop not only the story, but just as importantly, the characters and the setting.

Not bad at all.

Mark made it again!
He was able to mix technology and action in a way that people that work on the field really like for the good technical details. All the others will love action and deepness of the characters. I asked personally to Mark when Jeff will be back . Hope sooner than when he told me.

Dommage !

In the third Mark Russinovich novel he pits his hero Jeff Aiken against a criminal conspiracy to exploit computerised High Frequency Stock trading on the New York Stock Exchange an act that could bring the worlds financial markets crashing, In a highly accurate almost "real world" scenario Mark Russinovich highlights the dangers that unregulated and unrestricted computerised trading that could take place in the real world, leading to a global financial meltdown that gives me as a non-investor in stock pause for thought and does remind me of the introduction to Arthur C. Clarke's "Rama II".

In whole a storming, rollercoaster ride of a novel that I couldn't put down and read in a single session, for anyone thats not read one of the Jeff Aiken series before I whole heartedly recommend this book for any fans of the techno thriller genre.
