Product description

Style:Sony E

The Rokinon 24mm F1.4 ED AS IF UMC Wide Angle Lens for Sony E-Mount (NEX) Cameras has the 35mm focal length equivalence of a 36mm lens. With its f/1.4 maximum aperture, it is a very fast lens, ideal for low light and for freezing action as well as for shallow depth-of-field control. Optical construction incorporates four Extra-low Dispersion elements and two aspherical elements which reduce chromatic aberration and distortion for sharper images. Additionally, UMC coating has been applied to lens elements to improve light transmission and create a more contrast-rich image.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this lens
By Jager on May 5, 2015
I love this lens. Though it is manual, the optical quality is much better for aberration/astigmatism than the 1800 dollar Canon version when used at extremes (long exposures, wide open aperture.) Great lens for wide sky astrophotography. The Canon version will ruin your photos in this scenario. See attached photo. Though I went overboard with Lightroom in this one, it does show the capabilities of this lens.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is the best astrophotography lens available for DSLRs (as of 6/9/2016)
By Amazon Customer on July 8, 2016
I have only used this lens now for about a week. It is the best astrophotography lens available for DSLRs (as of 6/9/2016). It isn't perfect. There is still some (very very little) coma in the corners, but far less than any other lens I've used except the Tamron 15-30 VC. It is very touchy to achieve perfect focus, but possible. A focus lock would have been welcome. Vignetting is standard and I consistently and manually correct in LR at +47. Attached is two pictures taken in Acadia National Park, Maine. Both are used on a Canon 6D, wide open at 1.4 at 6400 ISO. The lifeguard stand picture is 10 seconds, the other is 15 seconds.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lots of coma in star images
By Jonathan H. Ward on January 7, 2019
I purchased this lens for use with astrophotography. Despite the reviews I've read on other forums, this lens did not live up to expectations. This was especially true for coma, which shows up as the stars being wing-shaped. You typically see coma more toward the edge of the field of view, and that can sometimes be reduced by stopping down the lens. But with this lens, there was coma even on stars in the center of the image. That was a deal-breaker. Also noticeable in the raw image is the vignetting in the upper corners of the image. That may be because I'm using this lens with a crop-sensor camera (Nikon D5500), but I would have expected vignetting in all four corners if that was the case. Vignetting can be dealt with in post-processing, but not coma. I'm returning this lens.

Also of note: When initially testing out this lens in daylight, I set this lens at f22 per instructions and it communicated with my camera. However, camera metering overexposed several stops when I tested it on a landscape.

(Images above: taken with Nikon D5500 on a SkyTracker Pro mount, Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 lens, light pollution filter, focused using BackYard Nikon astrophotography software, 30s exposure at ISO 800.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Love it.
By Shourjya on July 24, 2015
Love this lens. Bought it mostly for night photography. Captured a milky way pic. I am amazed by the sharpness of the stars in the pic.(Of course there are post processing involved as well)
Absolutely stunning to me to be honest.
Love the depth of field it creates.
But I am yet to experiment more with lens.

The only thing I am not so happy about is this lens is all manual.
I hope I get used to it sooner when I am using the lens in the daytime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not For Everyone But Worth Trying
By San Andreas Customs on February 28, 2019
Needed a lens for the sole purpose of astrophotography and was recommended this lens. Did some research and heard a lot of good about this lens and Rokinon as a whole. The main complaint I found was that the infinity focus was not accurate (refer to pic 5) . Someone recommended shooting in the day to find the so called sweet spot. Once you find it and mark it the rest of the rest of your photos should turn out good. The lens is rather large and heavy compared to my other lenses. But it feels very good in your hands when shooting on the move. On a an average tripod it tends to sag a little. Might be worth looking into a tripod mount ring. This was my first manual lens and after using it I have a greater appreciation for my AF lenses. It was difficult at first to dial in the focus but with practice it becomes second nature. The bokeh this lens produces is very nice and so are the natural colors. I did notice some darkening of the edges but not horrible, easily removable in post. One thing that helped me during the day to find the sweet spot was the focus magnifier on my A7RII. Now that I have the lens somewhat figured out I plan on using it for its original purpose, astrophotography. Overall I love the feel of the lens, in no way does it feel cheaply made. Even the hood and lens cap feel sturdy. The quality is good so far, not the best (personal experience) but you get what you pay for. The only minor downside I found so far is that the camera will not pic up which f stop its your using. So you will have to go into details and add it in yourself. I will add an update for the night and low light performance once completed. Also in the description and box it shows F stop but on the lens it shows T stop. Anyone care to answer which one it actually is?

Update: Got around to using it at night in the city and it performed better than I expected. There is a little bit of distortion going on but not enough that its unusable (last picture). Next update will be the critical stars test

5.0 out of 5 stars Best lens in my bag!
By Spencer J. Bawden on October 3, 2015
This lens is fantastic! I am using it on a Canon T3i, so I do not get the full 34mm view, but it still is amazing for night photography. I have used it for some portraits as well and they turn out perfect however due to it being a manual lens I have to turn on the preview display and the digitally zoom in on the subject to set the focus which can take some time, and if if got the aperture all the way open, the slightest movement can lose my focus. Regardless this is my new favorite lens in my set. It is big compared to my 8mm and my 50mm, also my kit lenses, but it's worth it since the shots are the best, and there is no coma on the stars like with my other lenses for night shots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Look at the stars!
By Pretty Flacko Joey on May 21, 2017
(Coming from an Amateur Photographer and never successfully doing astrophotography prior)
I've always marveled at the pictures some people get of the night sky and frankly what the human eye can't naturally see. The very first night of going out and shooting with this lens turned out GREAT. I have to give some credit to the Lonely Speck blog as they gave awesome advice. Very easy and fast to use. Amazing lens, can't wait to get back out there.

Also the lens cap seems a bit cheap and the lens hood is garbage but I paid for the lens and not those, so no big deal.

Using a Canon 70D and an entry level tri-pod
