I got this because I loved how small it was and didn't want to clutter up my entertainment system area. It does work on the most basic level. However, it's like the return of the 90's when it comes to speed and function on the interface level. Once my videos start streaming, it works great and at a normal, acceptable speed. But the interface itself is so...slow...It has to load each app for about 20-30 seconds most of the time, and the remote has barely any sensitivity at all, so you have to press the buttons harder than the other Roku models, and it has to be within a 20º radius of the box or else the signal gets lost (don't point the remote even slightly too far right or left). Not the end of the world, but definitely worth the money to get the next level up in my opinion. If you don't plan on using it much, this will be fine. If you are a daily user and/or have used older Rokus and Apple TV before, you will go mad with how slow the reaction on the interface and remote is. Apple TV and even the older Roku models are lightning fast compared to this model. Learn from my mistake.

Gotta love the Roku! Small, easy to install, so many channels! I have a Samsung DVD and I thought it had a lot of apps, but Roku has a zillion more--something for literally everyone. I've only had it about a week and I keep finding out more things about it. You can use it as soon as you set it up, but expect a learning curve after that because there's more to it than you think

For basic apps like Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix...this worked fine. It was a simple set up...basically plug and go...the first time it will walk you through a short set process. Nothing complicated...very user friendly.

I have the Roku, Fire Stick and AppleTv. All have their pluses and minuses. What I like about the Roku, it the buttons on the remote for Hulu and Netflix. The only think I wish, is that they'd let you program at least one of the buttons for "users choice". I'd have put Amazon on mine. I found rewinding on this to be difficult...it has a 9 second rewind...but really by the time you grab the remote and try to use it...it's useless...and you will get stuck "buffering" several times. Easier just to use the rewind button. Some thing I had some trouble with is using the App Buttons...sometimes if you pressed them they screen would freeze and you've have to hit the home button and reopen from the main screen.

Unlike Fire..this one you have to have a clear shot at the little box to make the remote work. However, this box is much lighter and can easily be set on top of a flat screen unlike AppleTv.

Out of the three devices, this was the easiest to turn the closed captioning on (I use it when dialogue is hard to hear over the sound of music in a movie so I don't have to keep rewinding).

One annoying thing to me...is it has a cloth "Roku" tag on the bottom of the remote (like a tag in the back of a pair of pants)...I find it odd...and I'm not sure the purpose of it. It's really no biggie...just odd.

All in all...this is a pretty good device. This is one that I think a non techie person (ie, Grandma friendly) could easily use.

BONUS on this one...there is an app you can download to your phone or ipad...I did like feature (I'm sure the other's have it...but Roku helps you do it in the set up process if you want).

Works just as well as the next level up with the exception I guess that you have to actually have to point at the receiver. But don't you do that automatically anyway? My kids got to losing the remote within a week and I was able to download the app and use it as a remote. No pointing required. I love that I can have the sound come out of my device for late night TV without waking the kids up :)

Maybe I'm the last person on the planet to try this? I sure do love it. I already have Netflix, Hulu & Amazon, but I was forced to watch on a laptop screen. THIS!! I have one HDMI TV in one room to finally be able to watch on, Too cool! I set it up myself so DON'T let some 3rd party scammer try to convince you that you need to pay a one time set up fee! They damn near got me. It looks very legit-- no matter what, it's not legit. ROKU does not charge a dime for set up or using the device. Unless you plan on renting, buying or subscribing to anything there is no charge. Anyway, I love it.

Super easy installation. This is my first time buying this type of device (streaming). I have nothing to compare it too other than to say that it eliminated the need to have another box rented from my cable company (Xfinity). I use the Roku in my bedroom and have only one cable box from my cable provider. So far so good.

I have a Samsung "smart tv" however the apps almost never work. My wifi signal is strong but streaming still buffers which seriously affects movie and tv show watching experience and the apps crash all the time. Now, I'm seeing notices that certain apps will no longer be supported on the device and advices other ways to access. WTH! Well, thank god we have external devices like the Roku! It's cheaper than opting for an "upgraded" "smart tv" and extremely easy to install.

Its OK. I first received a defective product, Amazon sent me a replacement right away. The second one worked.

Mechanically its a little annoying because you HAVE to point RIGHT AT the receiver. Maybe I'm spoiled by the wifi technology...But when I download the Roku app on my iPhone - then it works well as you don't have to point it.

Also some of the apps don't update for Roku, for the longest time the Amazon TV app was terrible, you have to pick and clikc play for every episode. etc... Hulu constantly sings out or just re-sets and I love my shows and the last episode played...

Anyway - it does work, but Amazon stick works better :(

The only upside is I was able to get the CW44 app on Roku and can't get that on Amazon...

I can't believe they finally came up with a ROKU at a cheaper price! I was worried that it wouldn't perform like the stick I had, but my fears were allayed when I used it the first time. The original loading was slow, but once I've used it, it's just as quick as the ROKU Stick. I have a super fast WiFi, so I guess that makes all the difference. Others have said that they were not happy that the remote had to be directed at the little box, but it came with a self-adhesive stick tape, so I taped it to the bottom of my TV, and there hasn't been any issue with pointing it in any direction. I am very glad I purchased this ROKU verses the Stick. I saved myself almost half the money, and got a great quality product!!

I haven't missed cable since purchasing the roku. I wasn't sure how I would like it since the express is said to have slower speed/load times but I haven't noticed any delays at all. I know sometimes you get what you pay for but it's not the case in Roku Express and definitely worth getting the cheaper version! I even bought 2 more for my other tv's.
