Use it in the garage so I didn't pay too much attention.
Not quality.
The other missing feature that may be useful to some is the lack of an Ethernet port. It does use wifi, which sounds like a great way to go. But with streaming TV, the ethernet port is the way to go. Wifi works but there will be an occasional delay during viewing. Not really bad but given the option to use an Ethernet port, it is the way to go. You can see a difference using Ethernet over wifi. Ethernet is faster and has reduced latency. This is noticeable with streaming TV.
The Roku streaming box is great. It has access to Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Sling, etc. It has everything. One big advantage over other boxes is the Roku search. You can search for a subject and Roku will list everything it finds. Not all vendor products do this and you miss out not having that capability. You could search on the internet for content but that is slow and not well organized. If you have not seen or used streaming TV yet, you will be surprised what is available and most of it is free. You will likely drop cable after using streaming TV. There are streaming services that charge, like Hulu, Sling, etc. Most cost $40 for what could be called the basic setup. Some have lower cost options but not enough available in my opinion. This biggest setback with Streaming TV is the lack of local stations, no ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. But these $40 services like Hulu have these stations and others available. You can get everything you get on cable plus a lot more with streaming TV and for about $40. The amount free content is amazing. So many free movies and many are great. The free movies typically are not the latest movies but there is so much you are likely to find something you have not seen. The clarity of the picture varies by source but in general it is very good, better than cable.
You can test out streaming TV using an android app on your phone or tablet. Obviously not something great for watching TV but will give you an idea what is available.
I am a little disappointed by this edition of the Roku. In my household we have had two Roku 2’s, three Roku HD’s and two Roku 3’s. Right now we are using the two Roku 3’s and two Roku HD’s. The HD’s are starting to get a little slow and crash more often than they used to. One of those is in my daughters bedroom, so for her birthday I bought her a Premier to connect to her 10 year old 42” Sony plasma TV. The older Sony Plasma’s did not come with HDMI, using instead DVI for the digital video input. (I love plasma’s and also have a 50” Sony plasma and a 50” Pioneer Elite plasma running in the house. The Pioneer has HDMI and on the Sony that uses one of the Roku 3’s I have to put a View HD audio breakout box to connect to the TV's analog audio input and then from the audio box to the TV I use an HDMI to DVI cable) Okay, so for this “upgrade” I had to buy the Premier and the audio breakout box to make it work with DVI/analog stereo audio. When I connected everything the picture came up pink instead of the normal Roku purple. In playing with the audio settings on the audio box it did one time correct the color issue, but a soon as I unplugged the HDMI and plugged it back in it went back to pink and I have never been able to get it to work right again. To simplify troubleshooting I removed the audio box and just went direct to the TV using the HDMI to DVI cable. I also took the Premier into the room with the 50” Sony that uses the same HDMI to DVI cable and just unplugged my Roku 3 and put the Premier in it’s place and it booted up the same; Pink! I took the Premier downstairs to the Pioneer with HDMI and it works fine.
I opened a text chat with Roku Support and after a similar explanation to the one above, the response I got was that Roku does not recommend any video adapters and that if I “preferred” to not use a regular HDMI cable they could not help me.
I don’t know why the newer Premier will not work in the same setup where the Roku HD, the 2 and 3 all work fine. I suspect it might be a newer HDMI standard or configuration and or something to do with the HDCP. I also suspect that a future firmware update might correct the problem but I don’t think my daughter will want to wait to see.
My options as far as I can tell are to return the Premier and try another model, say the Streaming Stick, but if I am right about the HDMI/HDCP thing it will have the same issue, or trade her the Premier for one of the 3’s in the house, but I actually use the Ethernet ports and remote headphones on those boxes, or replace her TV with an LCD that unless I spring for HDR or a AMOLED wont have as good a picture.
I am a big fan of the Roku streamers and recommend them to my friends and family. I still would do that, but if you are connecting to an older TV or projector that uses DVI, OR if you run your sound through a Home Theater system (In searching online for solutions to the DVI issue I found most of the complaints about the Premiers have to do with audio delay issues when trying to use 5.1 or 7.1 systems) you might want to wait and see if these issues get worked out or corrected in the next model.
The other complaints I have about the Premier have to do with things that I knew before I bought the box and decided I could accept, those being the lack of Ethernet, and no RF remote with headphones. You can get those things with the Premier+, but I don't see needing the 4k or HDR for at least 3-4 years and I have read that the + is even more buggy than the Premier.
