We switched from Directv after the World series and haven't looked back. We like the many options offered on Roku, and especially like the headphones that you can plug into the remote. Netflix, Crackle channels are favorites and everything is easily programmed. We also bought a digital antenna in order to keep local stations, as the one draw back on the network stations carried by Roku is seeing the news a day or hours later (CBS might be real time) and not having sports networks. You can try many options of programming for a week free and we decided on a subscription to Slingtv so my husband can watch sports that doesn't play on Fox or local channels. We also can watch WD on AMC with Slingtv. You can purchase movies for download, and there are many options for news outside of the typical media via Roku. We definitely get a lot for our buck with Roku than we did with Directv, and no worries of contracts being up and losing favorite channels due to contract disputes with media moguls either.
Total initial investment of Roku and antenna was about $175.00. The bill used to be $106-110 a month and now we pay $25.00 for Sling TV already set up on the Roku and it can be accessed on all Roku tvs, and game boxes. We have 1 Roku smart TV, the streaming media player and 1 TV that we connect to an Xbox for Slingtv. We have fiber optic Uverse and often have 3-4 people using it in the evening as well as have cell phones and computers connected with no issues.
I was tired of paying for infomercials which seemed to be on about 40% of the channels, all the time and the commercial slots on regular programming seems much longer and more frequent these days and because we don't watch a lot of TV it has proven to be a very good move for us.
The only negative I can say about our Roku box is that we have had to reboot it several times in the 6-7 weeks since we got it. It locks up. And it runs hot. I'm just wondering if I should get it replaced, or if this is normal.
But Roku itself is a godsend. Between that and our new Tivo box, we're finally free from huge cable bills.
Roku search does work as advertised to display about 3 options to watch a particular show but they are all usually the same price;. $2.95 per episode our $19.95-29.95/ season of usually 10 shows.
