1)If you need to connect by WiFi in a room far away from your WiFi router,I would recommend the Roku Streaming Stick PLUS or Roku Ultra.
2)If you have a 4K TV,I would recommend the Roku Ultra or Roku Streaming Stick PLUS.
3)To search for content using your voice,go with either the Streaming Stick,Streaming Stick PLUS or Ultra. All 3 of these models also have a remote that can control the power and volume on a TV.
4)If you want a wired ethernet connection,go with the Roku Ultra.
5)If you want to connect to an old TV with RCA/Composite audio/video jacks, you will need the Express PLUS
6)The Express models have a remote where it has to be pointed at the device, unlike the other Roku models.
7)If you are only going to buy one Roku device,I would recommend the Roku Ultra. The Ultra has many unique features that the other Roku models don't such as:
-Gaming buttons to play video games
-Remote finder to find a lost remote control
-Ethernet port for a wired connection
-Micro SD card slot
-Night listening mode (this lowers the volume of loud, explosive sounds and raises the volume of soft sounds like whispers.Very useful!)
-Headphone jack on the remote for listening without disturbing others
For those who have not used a Roku before, here are some tips that might be helpful:
1)There is no monthly fee to use a Roku. There are many free channels/apps with free movies, music and TV programs and some people use Roku only for the free channels and do not pay any fees.
You do NOT have to enter credit card info if you only wish to view free content and you can always add credit card info to your account later for paid channels/apps.If you plan on viewing free content only,I suggest setting up a Roku account before you activate the device. When you reach the page to enter credit card info, some browsers will show a "Skip,I'll add later" option at the bottom. If you do not see this option, simply log out of your account, then log back in.You may have to then enter a different activation code for your device if you skip entering credit card info during device set up,but you do NOT have to enter credit card info if you only want to view free content.
2)Some of the most popular free channels/apps are: YouTube,Pandora radio,The Roku Channel,Pluto TV,Tubi TV,Crackle,CBS News,NBC News,ABC,PBS, PBS KIds and many more. You can also find a free live stream of FOX News on YouTube by searching "Fox News Live" on YouTube.
3)Some of the most popular paid channels/apps are Netflix,Hulu,Amazon video,HBO Now,Vudu,Sling TV,Spectrum TV and Direct TV Now.
4)If you are looking for a bundle of channels of live TV to replace cable TV,check out Sling TV,Spectrum TV,Direct TV Now,Hulu,Pluto TV and Playstation Vue.All of these are paid services except for Pluto TV,which is free.
5)To find and add new channels on Roku, just press the Home button on the remote control, scroll down and select "Streaming Channels".There you will find thousands of channels/apps in many different categories and many of them are free.
My one gripe about Roku (and other streaming devices) is the lack of a fully functional web browser and I hope Roku will include web browsing on models in the near future.I have been surfing the web on the big screen for years and find it ridiculous when an internet connected TV device does not allow you to surf the internet and forces one to switch to yet another internet connected device to do so.
I am aware of the screen mirroring function from smartphone/PC/tablet but find that a poor excuse to not include a web browser.People who type a lot of messages and/or emails like myself much prefer typing on a wireless keyboard rather than a phone/tablet/remote control.
EDITED TO ADD: I received a very nice email from Roku stating that they want to help. I thanked them, but told them that after reading and posting online at a IT forum, I have ordered a Google WiFi mesh thingy that is supposed to fix all my problems (please God!). So I told the nice man from Roku (via email), that I will get that WiFi system on Thursday, and will get back to them as to IF that was my issue. It still seems weird that ALL my other devices connect fine...my two android phones, two chromebooks, one tablet and one kindle. But I am NOT an IT expert, so truly haven't a clue. I still wish help would have been easier to get though, but will report back on if the hook up problems were on MY end...I cannot blame Roku for my faulty equipment. (and I think I need to look into a new career as an IT person....maybe I'll go back to school at age 53!!) :)
Dear Roku: I have tried to like you, I really have. But I have put in many hours in the past few days, reading websites, reading YOUR website, chatting with online customer support, trying to call customer support. I have tried, but I am unable to get your product to work, and YOU are UNABLE to help me, via phone, online chat, online support forums or email. I HAVE TRIED!!!!
Ok, I purchased two Roku Streaming Sticks. I am so ready to ditch our satellite TV. Set up the two sticks, one in each bedroom. The set up was a BREEZE...I was happy!! :D Then I decided to transfer the stick to the living room TV (which is closer to the router, only about 15 feet away). But WHAT? The Roku Streaming Stick would not stream! I tried to set up the wireless network, but the Stick could not connect. I was disappointed. So I tried the OTHER Stick. Same issue, could not connect. Both Sticks could SEE the network, just couldn't connect. Oh well, I thought...I'll just use these ones in the bedroom. I'll buy another one for the living room TV...no need to have "portable" sticks. (even though that is a BIG selling point). So I brought the Sticks back to their respective bedrooms (where just 10 minutes earlier they were playing happily). But WAIT! They will not connect to the wireless network!! After hours of reading online, I learn that the only thing I can do is to do a Factory Reset...which basically wipes EVERYTHING out. So I did this, and went through the set up again. Oh joy! The Roku is ALIVE!!! Then I accidently unplugged the electricity from the Roku. No big deal, but WAIT! Oh no! Roku is DOWN again!!! No hope for it....ended up doing ANOTHER factory reset. Hmmm....THIS is going to be an issue, since I have rural coop electricity that goes off almost every week for a few minutes at least.
So, I head on over to Roku's website and initiate a customer service chat. (it was the middle of the night by this time, so couldn't phone). I spent a LONG time explaining the issue to the agent...but really got no help. She/he (wasn't sure which) gave me the Customer Service phone number. I planned to call today.
Well, just to be on the safe side, I also posted in the Roku Support Forums. One kind soul responded that maybe I should get the Roku Streaming Stick PLUS (at $20 MORE for each one). He advised that the PLUS sticks are much more powerful. So, ok, I returned my original (weakling) REGULAR Streaming Sticks and purchased two of the PLUS Streaming Sticks. Came home...installed...rinse and repeat. THE SAME ISSUE. Ugh....
But am I defeated? NO I AM NOT. (but hubby was mumbling about building a bonfire to "roast" our Rokus). So, I call the Customer Support phone number that the nice Chat Support Representative gave me last night. First message on the phone was saying that Roku is experiencing higher than average call volumes. (ya think???) THEN...(and truly, you are not going to believe this) it went on to see that my EXPENSIVE Roku Streaming Stick PLUS was not "ELIGIBLE" for phone support!!! WHAT????
Ok Roku, I'm a fun gal, but NOW you are ticking me off. So back to the email, and I emailed again. Got a response thanking me for my email and saying that if I was still having issues, I should email them! WTH? I just DID email them!!!
Then I dashed over to the Roku Support Forums, added a HELP! to my original message...no response as of yet.
Now I am back in line on their Customer Support CHAT function. I started at number 14 in the Queue, but am (after an hour) down to number 3.
But what shall I say? It STILL won't work!!! I even told EVERYONE that if I need a new wireless router for some reason, I'll buy one, but I don't know which one will play nicely with Roku. Shouldn't Roku know this? All of my other devices connect fine with my Wireless Router.
So, here I set, in the online Chat queue. I am also going to post this review on the Roku Streaming Stick PLUS.
I had noticed that Roku tends to respond quickly to negative amazon reviews....but they usually say "hey, email us, we'd love to help". Well Roku, I've emailed (twice), called (was denied), used your website help articles (no help) and your help forums. I am in chat right now...for the SECOND night in a row.
WHAT THE HECK DOES A PERSON HAVE TO DO TO GET SOME HELP?
I will be happy to come back and update this review if help arrives in some form from Roku. Until then, I cannot recommend their products.
I have purchased this to enjoy hdr10 feature of Roku for Netflix and youtube. My tv Vizio support 4k hdr10. I did reach out to Vizio support but they deny any such issues reported so far.
