- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2014This is an excellent carrier that has already proven itself on an 1800 mile round trip drive to Florida. We needed a cargo carrier so we could use one of our 3rd row seats which wouldn't leave much cargo room in our Mazda CX-9. And I did not want the added drag, reach to load or wind noise from a roof carrier - been there done that (our previous roof carrier impacted mileage as much as 3-4 MPG).
This carrier came as many have reported in a somewhat beat up box. But the carrier itself was not damaged at all. The carrier was easy to assemble - use a torque wrench! - but once assembled it is very heavy! One person can maneuver in and out of a hitch, but watch your back! I also purchased the optional LED tail lights which were very easy to install, but the wiring connector on the lights does intrude about an inch in to the basket area. My bigger issue now will be where to put this thing when it is not in use! Oh well, it is big, roomy and solid!
Anyway, back to the trip. The carrier extended a perfect distance from my tailpipes and curves upwards to give plenty of ground clearance. Looks like a factory accessory! However, when fully loaded - both SUV and carrier - it did scrape once or twice when ascending or descending some steep drives. See that black plate on the back? Took a few scrapes, but thats it. Solid! The carrier accommodated 4 large suitcases in an eTrailers bag (the Rola bag is too small!!) - 2 of the oversized Kirkland suitcases if you are familiar with them - and 2 eBags hard sided suitcases. Total weight was about 200 pounds. No issues at all! No noise, no impact on mileage! Can't wait to use it on another trip.
And for those of you worried about it not folding - I had some buyers remorse initially - we did not encounter much of an issue. First, I applied red reflector tape to ensure it was easily seen even when empty. And most parking spots I could pull the front end of the car far enough forward or over the curb to ensure the carrier was even with the end of the spot. Save the money on a folding carrier!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2012This carrier is very nice. It assembled in a few minutes and fits nicely in the 2" hitch. you need you own hitch pin as this did nto come with one. Just use the one you have with you ball. But if you don't have one, keep that in mind.
The thing weighs a lot and this is pro and a con. It takes a little effort to put 75lbs in the receiver and to get the pin in. I did it by myself, but having a second person would make the task easier. But once on the weight keeps the carrier from moving and of course makes this a strong rack. The rack can hold 600lbs, but you need to keep in mind ht etonge weight of the vehicle and the hitch. In my case that is 400lbs so I once I duduct the weight of the rack, that leaves me with 325 lbs capacity. That still is pleanty.
The light kit is a great addition. The picture shows it, but it is not included. Well worth it IMO to avoid a rear end collision.
The unit could have been packed better and had a small scratch on it. But, a little touch up and I was good to go. It will get scratched up anyway.
In short this rack it tough and capable. I'm very happy with it.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2012My family outgrew the cargo space in my Acura MDX, so I went searching for a hitch-mount carrier. Prior to purchasing my Rola, I think I read almost every review for every available carrier and wanted to offer up my commentary for anyone doing a similar search.
I was originally drawn to the Rola because the reviews seemed to indicate this was a pretty solid carrier, and frankly, I like they way it looked. So far I am pleased with my purchase.
To date, I have only three minor complaints:. Like others mentioned, the box was pretty beat upon arrival. All the parts were still there, and in good condition, so I really didn't care. The light kit (if purchased) does have the wiring connecting to the lights inside the cargo area. I didn't think it was terrible, but you did need to pay some attention when packing it. Lastly, on my MDX, I cannot see the carrier in my mirrors. (Note, when mounted, the carrier will add about three feet). This could easily be remedied with fiberglass markers, but I wasn't that worried about it.
What I like: 1) It was easy to assemble. Bolt the two basket halves together, attach that to the center hitch, and you are done. Something like 12 bolts. I did mine in the driveway after dark and it took me maybe a half hour. It did take me maybe another half for the light kit, but only because I was a little picky about where to run the wires. 2) It is a solid carrier with quality construction. The frame and mesh floors of both basket halves are welded together. The flooring is a sturdy gauge mesh and everything is powder-coated vs. paint. It does have some weight to it; 60lbs if I recall. It can be mounted by one person, but of course that would depend on size and strength. 3) Due to the size of the side rails and floor mesh, you have an almost unlimited number of strap mounting points.
This carrier is a bit more expensive than many others, but it hauled everything I needed it to without a single vibration, rattle or squeak. Well worth the money in my opinion.

IanReviewed in Canada on August 22, 20205.0 out of 5 stars Great Piece of Kit - worth paying for quality
I am very impressed with this carrier. Putting it together was straight forward. Yes you do need to use your own tools to tighten the nuts amd bolts (except the anti lock hitch pin which comes with an appropriate sized wrench). Parts all mated nicely and amount of work to put it together was not significant. Basically fitting five pieces together and a total of 12 bolts.
This carrier is attractive and solid. It is heavy duty and feels bomb proof. Once attached with anti rattle pin their was no rattle and in my 3000km first trip with it, there was no noise or detectable movement of carrier.
For those interested i find it easily accomodates three standard sized rubber made bins across (see photo) plus room for an additional narrow item (i am estimating up to 12 inches for such item)
Also note that with incandescent rola light kit there was space for rubber made bins to be placed without contacting lights (the back of lights protrude somewhat into carrier cargo area).
This carrier is more expensive and it is heavier than some others. What you get is a solid piece of kit that to my eye looks good, is strong, quiet and well made.
Note it does not fold up when not in use (there is another rola unit for that). We will use carrier for trips and it will not generally stay on vehicle other than trips, so ability to fold not so important. By being non folding you eliminate potential source of play and rattle. If driving around with no cargo i would want to do something to increase viz of unit to reduce chance
Of someone driving into it. I may keep empty couple of bins on it to increase visibility. By the way buy and use ratchet straps. You will Thank yourself later for how well they work.

VaughanReviewed in Canada on June 21, 20215.0 out of 5 stars Very well build
Was not certain of how sturdy this carrier would be; however, this thing is well build. All welds are solid with no signs of slag or rust in the seams. Assembly is easy, even for one person with the carrier on it's side, it took maybe 10 minutes with the right socket and wrench to assemble and tighten everything down.
It is perfect for hanging off the back of our trailer. Does not shift or jiggle (not that I can tell from inside the cab of the truck) and is still steady after a few hours on the roads. I'll likely add a hitch stabilizer just to be certain it doesn't jiggle and to provide additional security.
My only complaint, the hitch pin is a bolt and although I can torque it down, it could be quickly and easily removed. Ideally, an extended bolt that could have a lock attached would at least provide a visual deterrence.
Overall very pleased with the construction and quality of this carrier. I have no reservations recommending this product to others.
CarleyReviewed in Canada on August 6, 20215.0 out of 5 stars Works great and it doesn't raddle!
Very well made. We have taken this on 2- 8 hour road trips and it's never raddled or given us any issues. The arm is far enough we can still open the back of our SUV. Excellent purchase if you require more cargo space!
PocoReviewed in Canada on September 1, 20175.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars
A bit heavy to move around but a great way to add more storage to my car for trips to the cabin. Keeps my car under 20 feet in length so a ferry ride doesn't cost any more.
NOReviewed in Canada on July 19, 20215.0 out of 5 stars Solid and well built
We were able to carry our gears (significant weight) without any problems on a long distance ride (over 1500 km). I strongly recommend it
