Top Customer Reviews
Stories like Weregild, A Secret of the Trade, Badlands, Between Honor and Glory, Eyes of the Spider, Scaling the Tower and The Heist fit the mold of what I felt this book should be, but others, such as How Pell Left, Remember When, God's Love, Owasa, and The Walking, while not terrible stories, are hardly "thoroughly thrilling tales of harrowing scope", as the description calls this anthology. In fact, I can't even really figure out why those particular stories - especially Owasa and Remember When - were even contenders.
In the forward to the book the editor claims they received "hundreds" of submissions. Either these 22 stories were the only submissions penned to an acceptable level of quality, or the editors actually went to great pains to avoid creating a collection of stories that fit the framework of what I think "an old school gaming periodical" would publish as a fiction anthology.
Again, I don't want to knock the actual quality of writing (otherwise this would be a 2-star review), but I was expecting an anthology with a lot more "thoroughly thrilling tales of harrowing scope".
