The year is 2018. There are no wars. There is no crime. There is only...the Game. In a world where ruthless corporations reign supreme, this vicious and barbaric 'sport is the only outlet for the pent-up anger and frustrations of the masses. Tuned to their televisions, the people watch Rollerball : a brutal mutation of football, motocross and hockey. Jonathan E. (James Caan, Misery) is the champion player, a man too talented for his own good. The Corporation has taken away the woman Jonathan loves (Maud Adams, Octopussy) but it can't take away his soul, even if diabolical corporate head (John Houseman, The Paper Chase) tells him he d better retire...or suffer the old-fashioned way. With its surrealistic imagery and tense action sequences, Rollerball grips you by the heart and never lets you go!

The ending shot is simply one of the best freeze action shots I have ever seen in Cinema.
That said, it would be nice if it were remastered on blu-ray but we will have to take things as they come.
So glad to have my own personal copy.
This is a prophetic movie of individual will vs. corporate power. Rollerball champion Johnathan E. (James Caan) is puzzled and offended by his corporation's seemingly-irrational decision to force him into early retirement. He begins to investigate. But corporations will not tolerate either questions or disobedience. Corporate-written rules of the games go through changes, each designed to tighten themselves around Johnathan like an anaconda. If Johnathan will not retire, he will be destroyed.
Tonight I watched this movie with an eye to its technical side. Norman Jewison's direction is genius. He perfectly uses his set designs, locations, lighting, editing, costumes, and music to build a world which is utopian on the surface but distopian underneath. The actors look like real rollerballers, muscular gladiators just one evolutionary step up from barbarians, supremely cocky and focused to win.. John Houseman is the unrelenting executive tasked with bringing Johnathan E. back under corporate control.
