Sweet "modern" take of the "royalty's day off" story, where lovely young princess Audrey Hepburn has a teenage meltdown when on royal tour, and takes an unapproved break. Her adventure with sneaky reporter Gregory Peck (who tries to be tabloid bottom-feeder, but is far too gentlemanly to let her get into any trouble that would raise a 1950's eyebrow for a normal American teen) has had me dreaming of visiting Rome for decades. The sights are beautiful! I'm so glad the studio had its money tied up in Europe and was forced to film on location! The best part was that a princess was allowed to act like a young lady and still have fun - it is a very family friendly show.

A lovely story. Hepburn is a foreign princess on an official visit to Rome. She chafes at the rest she decides restrictions required by protocol and decides to break out. She climbs out of the embassy window at night and goes to sleep on a public bench. She is rescued, you might say, by Gregory Peck, an American journalist, and together they go on a hugely entertaining romp around Rome, involving riding a "borrowed" Vespa scooter, drinking rather much wine, getting involved with the police at a show, breaking a guitar over the unfortunate owner's head and jumping into the river to avoid arrest… and much more.

I recommend getting both the 2-disc version for the slightly improved video of the film (plus 5 special features not on the 1-disc version; the Amazon product page is incorrect to say "none") and the 1-disc version for the 25.5-minute "Remembering Roman Holiday" special feature that is missing from the 2-disc version. This short packs in an enormous amount of information: archival footage, wonderful film clips and interview clips with Gregory Peck, Eddie Albert, Eddie Albert, Jr., Catherine Wyler (daughter of the director), A.C. Lyles (Paramount executive), and Molly Haskell (film critic). You will see the part of Audrey's screen test when she thought the camera was turned off, her Oscar acceptance speech, and her fond memories of Gregory Peck at a Lincoln Center tribute in 1992. We can only hope for a Blu-Ray version someday of this timeless classic!

The Roman Holiday DVD is a great classic movie that even shows up clear on a 4K TV. There is no cussing, nudity, or using God's name in vain - clean family entertainment. For those who haven't watched it yet, this movie is about a princess that secretly leaves her palace to find out what life outside the palace is like and ends up getting into one adventure after another with the help of some American reporters itching to get an exclusive story on the personal life of a princess.

This is a story of a princess who is young to be performing the official duties of the Royal family but loves to experience the outside world. On the night of her visit to Rome, having disconnected from the real world for long, she slips away from her residence. During this little adventure she meets an American news reporter named Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck.) Audrey Hepburn offers great performance as a naïve young woman who wants to be a common person away from the pageantry she is used to. It is a sheer luck that Hepburn was cast for this role. After she auditioned for the movie, a brief chat with director William Wyler convinced him that she is the best for the job. No one has ever regretted this decision as Hepburn went on to win the Academy award. Hepburn is a natural, and remains at ease in her portrayal as a princess enjoying the real world. No wonder Academy awarded the biggest prize in Hollywood even though she was novice to a Hollywood film and this is her first movie. Originally Cary Grant was offered the lead role but casting Gregory Peck was not the best decision one could have made. Peck has made great movies but he does not shine in this film. Shooting of the film in and around Italy adds depth to the story of movie. The princess taking a ride with Bradley in a Vespa motor scooter is an iconic symbol of American cinema. Anyone who has seen the other movie of Hepburn; Breakfast at Tiffany's could see some similarities in the story of these two films as she play a free spirited woman who doesn't know what she really wants in life. The movie was written by a Hollywood Blacklisted author Dalton Trumbo who did not get credit in the original movie but the DVD released later gives credit he really deserves.

I did not have much knowledge of Audrey Hepburn before watching this film. It is an amazing film because a star is born in front of your eyes. I am not talking as a film historian, but as an emotional human being. You realise that this woman is going to make an impact. I would especially recommend it to people below 40 that probably are not so familiar with this actress. The impact of watching this film will be larger.

Simple and effective story telling you don't need over the top CGI, or any at all, adding just sweet chemistry makes for a classic movie.
