By Alcuin Reid on March 2, 2008
The Roman Ritual was probably the least fixed or uniform of the traditional liturgical books: different countries used different rituals for some of the sacraments, blessings, etc., according to legitimate local custom as approved by the Holy See. And the same authority granted various permissions for the use of the vernacular in these rites throughout the first half of the twentieth century.

In the 1940's Father Weller began the mammoth task of preparing a Latin-English edition of the Roman Ritual which was eventually published in three volumes in 1946, 1950 and 1950 respectively. It is an utterly splendid edition providing the clergy with all they could possibly want in respect of the rites of the sacraments, funerals, blessings &c. Preserving Christian Publications has reprinted this edition, taking care to preserve its beauty and its utility: the text is printed in black and red throughout and the books are hardbound with a marker ribbon - all of which makes them ideal for regular pastoral use.

Students of the more ancient rites of the Catholic Church will also find them valuable, particularly if their Latin is not perfect. Though such students should be aware that the Holy See did issue a new 'editio typica' of the Roman Ritual in 1952. This does not render Weller's edition obsolete - substantially they are the same - but, given that the Roman Ritual was always an adaptable liturgical book, one ought to check matters carefully before making judgements about what was or was not the older practice.

Preserving Christian Publications are to be commended for this splendid work. We look forward to the future fruits of their endeavours in this field.

While they are not the current text and rites used by the Catholic Church (for the most part) these books are a great tool to better understand the history and tradition of the Catholic Church. The rites are very rich in tradition and faith. I actually would love to see these rite return to prominence to the Church instead of the highly watered down rites currently in use!

All Priest, Religious and Laity should have a copy to read through and help better understand the Church.

In Christ.

A must for any theologian, priest, or seminarian. Provides a complete bilingual Roman Ritual. Some parts, especially The Blessings, vastly superior to the modern Book of Blessings.

"Awake, thou that sleepiest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light." This 3 volume set is for the best of any endowed theologians. A universal means of holiness acknowledging that God can do all things through prayer. Even if you are not full priestly consecrated, you can be an instrument of divine worship.
