ROMAN NUMBERS is funny and endearing at the same time. You are bound to laugh out loud at the anecdotes the novel's characters share with each other and the funny events that take place in their lives. However, the novel also has a much more profound side to it. It raises many interesting philosophic questions about the nature of time and memory. In short, the novel offers a perfect mix of ingredients: there is something to laugh about, something to think about and for those who miss the Ukraine that is now in the past, something to feel nostalgic or possibly even cry about.
In case you haven't read Stories of Similar Epochs (Russian Edition) , don't worry. ROMAN NUMBERS works perfectly well as a stand-alone work of fiction. While the readers who met Klara, Samuil, Maria Isaakovna and Vladimir Fedorovich in the preceding novel will enjoy finding out what happened with this characters later on, new readers will be able to enjoy ROMAN NUMBERS without any knowledge of the previous novel in the series.
