She has a trash talkin' black roommate who serves as the token black person, a vampire who could fall for her if she smelled better, a father who lusts after her in a gross way and a best Native American male friend who wants more from her than friendship. Did I mention Flabio, who is the lovely cover model?
I read this book in one setting and laughed my head off because it really does explore how silly and nonsensical so many romance novels can be, especially those about nothing and there are more of them out there than you think.
This is not a novel for those who take life too seriously or think it is not "funny" to make use of society stereotypes when it comes to blacks, homosexuals, Native Americans, vampires or any other group. This is just a silly romp to take your mind off the seriousness of life and because it did that for me, I give it five stars!
I spit out my food so many times I have to clean my keyboard. Smella's adventures with Deadward are hilarious, and her attempts to get him into bed are so clumsy (and in a way...realistic) I found myself rooting for her. His deadpan delivery of the same exact motivations in another, bestselling, vampire book are just so spot-on, you realize how ridiculous that other book is. And yes, I admit to being a fan of that unnamed vampire book series.
It really cheered me up.
Favorite line (as remembered): "Deadward would never sneak into her room and sit by her bedside. That would be creepy."
Smella can't decide on Deadwood and his money or Snake and his long.... OK she has decided. She needs a rich hubby to pay for her son's heart operation... that would be the rich vampire, Deadwood. Getting in the way is Snake Long who always making her horny. OH and a minor nuisance is there's someone killing romance novel heroins, of which Smella knows she is one... if she can get into the right book.
The bad thing about this book is that the Twilight addicts will hate it and give it one star; and those that hate Twilight will love it and give it five stars. I am going to try not to rate it, if Amazon won't let me I will go middle of the line... three stars.
BTW KUDOS ON THE COVER PJ JONES. That alone had me laughing.
I wanted to throttle the so-called heroine, Smella, but I'm quite sure that was the point. She was a gorgeous airhead who couldn't remember the name of her dying baby while claiming she was a virgin. None of the men were painted as the perfect men except for some of the unnamed cowhands near the beginning of the book. I liked the cover you find on Amazon (large bare chested man wearing just a kilt) versus the one here on Goodreads (were gerbil).
I'll have to read Jones' other novels when I want a good giggle. She's entertaining and writes a story that you'll find very hard to put down.
