Adam Holloway has been following leads and trailing a Zane Ogden, the man who swindled countless families out of their homes and land and leaving many dead along the way. When his father goes missing, never to be found, and Ogden has a signed promissory note for the family farm, Adam doesn’t believe what Ogden tells them. Adam will enter the war and leave his family in Missouri.
Deborah Frazier is nothing more than a pawn in her father’s business dealings, including arranging a marriage between his friend, a man his age, and his oldest daughter. Deborah has never been one to take a stand for herself, and for a time acquiesces to the situation, but on the day of the wedding, she will leave and board a train to Cowboy Creek with a few possessions and wearing her wedding gown. When she arrives in town, the bachelors assume she is ready to marry, but she will spur each man’s advancement in that direction.
The plot will have more than one mystery in the story. Adam knows that Ogden is said to be in Cowboy Creek, he knows that someone is buying up the ranches and that Ogden has an accomplice, a female with the first initial D. While posing as Adam Draper, a cattleman rancher looking to buy and move to the area, he is researching his leads. He believes that Deborah is the mystery woman and will try to learn more about her, and what secrets she is hiding. But when he follows her at night, assuming she is going to meet Ogden, he will be shocked to see she is taking food to two runaway children, Liam and Lily.
Adam hasn’t kept in communication with his brothers or mother and what a shock to find them in Cowboy Creek. Russ lives in town and is an attorney and Seth has a small ranch, and their mother lives with him. Not only that, but his brothers are married and have families. He won’t be able to keep his presence a secret but must have his family made aware of his alias and asked them not to give him away.
“is it wrong to want answers, Lord? To seek justice? My family needs closure.”
The story is full of mystery, suspense, angst, secrets, miscommunication, doubts, fear, determination, vengeance, and justice. It will take on life and death situations as Adam attempts to capture his prey. Deborah knows that her father has learned where she is and a confrontation is soon to occur. In the meantime, she has fallen in love with Liam and Lily and is attempting to get guardianship of these two orphans. What will happen between her and Adam? He seems dedicated to his job, and she is ready to settle down and have a family with the children. Have these two found the person they can love?
“You’ve taught me the meaning of love and trust, courage and self-sacrifice.”
The story is not preachy but does share prayers, Bible verses, and has a beautiful view of God’s mercies and grace. It is realistic in that things happen to both the just and unjust, good and bad. It is a clean, sweet historical western.
I found some mystery (well actually a lot of), adventure, secrets and oh so much more! As I kept reading I had so many emotions it was exhausting, but exciting too.
Upon meeting Deborah and Adam you instantly become intrigued. The closed off Adam with his secrets and sweet kind-hearted Deborah seemed like an unlikely pair. What happens when they find themselves with misunderstandings and disillusions? Well....read this book and find out.
