Note : the game is one disk, and I had installed the base game onto my computer, and I enjoyed playing the game, then I attempted to install the Alexander, it said "No previous installation of Rome : Total War. Is program will now terminate."
I was also playing Civ V at the time and this was tilted more towards the battlefield aspects with less (but still important) focus on creating an empire with a strong economy.
Running on Windows 7 with a half decent graphics card, it's great. The graphics are not the highest quality, the AI can be a bit dumb - but it gets the job done very nicely. Working through a battle with 10,000 men on both sides is great fun.
Since the game engine is relatively old, it only uses 1 CPU so having a mega-gaming computer with 12 multi-threading CPUs isn't going to help. Slightly older CPUs with a higher clock speed is your best bet, but the main load falls on the graphics card.
Sorry Civ V, but Total War Rome has my heart. Marching my legions to conquer all four corners of the known(ish) world is just too much fun.
Once that gets old, there are several excellent mods that are easy to download and install. These extend the basic capabilities of the game engine with improved graphics, improved AI, and expanded maps.
Definitely worth the price.
