One of the great Shakespeare adaptations—Franco Zeffirelli’s sublime take on the immortal romantic tragedy
Product Description
One of the great Shakespeare adaptations, this sublime take on the Bard’s immortal romantic tragedy by Franco Zeffirelli breathed new life into the oft-told tale by casting actual teenagers in the title roles. As the young lovers whose affair threatens to inflame the tensions between their feuding families in Renaissance Verona, Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting vividly capture the mix of adolescent ardor and turmoil that fuels their destiny-driven liaison. A sensory banquet thanks to Nino Rota’s delicate score and the exquisite, Oscar-winning costumes and cinematography, Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare at its most deeply felt and passionately alive.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2025What more can I say that others haven't already said countless times before me? Let me try. This movie of Romeo and Juliet is by far the best screen adaptation of the two star crossed lovers I have ever seen. I've seen many over the years and none compare to this version.
My wife introduced me to this particular movie back in the early 1980s when it aired on the ABC network television movie of the week. At that time I had no interest in any movie containing Romeo and Juliet. She convinced me to watch it with her because she had seen it several times at one our local movie theaters sometime back in the mid1970s when it had been re-issued by Paramount Pictures, and she was sure I would like it because "it had a great sword fighting scene." Well, I watched, and I was transfixed by the two actors who portrayed the lead roles. These two actors couldn't have been more perfectly cast. Leonard Whiting is marvelous as the young, impassioned lover Romeo, and Olivia Hussey is just stunning as the beautiful Juliet. Leonard was 17 and Olivia was 15 when they made this film in 1968 and rightly represent the youthfulness of the characters in William Shakespeare's stage play. Franco Zeffirelli does a masterful job of directing them and the supporting cast who are excellent in filling out this romantic but tragic story. Nino Rota supplies a beautiful musical score that just heightens the romance and youthful character of its participants, as well as the violence and tragedy of the story.
Now as for the Criterion Collection Blu-Ray disc, it is far better than the original DVD Paramount release that I have in my collection. The movie has a 4K digital restoration and the colors are exquisite. It also has the original intermission card inserted at the halfway point of the movie. There are a few special features that include a 2018 documentary on the director Franco Zeffirelli and a couple of interviews with Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey from 1967 and 2016, plus an essay by scholar Ramona Wray. I just want to to say if you are contemplating purchasing this disc...do so! It is well worth the price. Most everything that I've ever purchased from The Criterion Collection has been excellent, this one is no exception.
I finish my review by acknowledging the recent passing of the most beautiful Juliet I've ever seen on the silver screen. Parting is truly such sweet sorrow. Rest in peace, Olivia!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2023I first saw Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet as a precocious 13-year-old in a college-town movie house that no longer exists. We hadn't yet studied Shakespeare in my local middle school but, like most kids that age, I was aware of his work, and of the most famous lines uttered by his characters. I was intrigued when I first saw the trailer for the film. The fact that the lead actors were drop-dead gorgeous and not much older than me sealed the deal. I had to see it! And so I entered the theater not expecting to understand much of Shakespeare's dialogue but fully anticipating a bounty of lush beauty on display. I was not disappointed in 1968 and was not disappointed in 2023 when I received the 4k digital restoration Blu-ray from the Criterion Collection.
As is the case with most Criterion releases, Romeo and Juliet looks beautiful, there are interviews with the lead actors (from both 1967 and 2016), a chat with the late director (courtesy of a 2018 documentary), and an essay from a noted (Shakespeare) scholar. I was tempted to remove one star for the absence of a commentary track that one would normally expect to accompany a film of this caliber, but I just can't do it: Zeffirelli's production, and this 4k restoration are too exquisite for me to complain about the commentary missing from this release.
Zeffirelli's movie itself will always be a treasure for me, not the least because it prompted a certain self-awareness that I hadn't previously considered at the young age of 13. Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey make a perfect Romeo and Juliet. True, their approach to Shakespeare's dialogue is rather modern in its delivery but, for me, especially as an adolescent, that fact made the play all the more accessible, and I actually understood what all the fuss was about. The supporting cast is splendid, particularly John McEnery as Mercutio, Pat Heywood as Juliet's nurse, and Milo O'Shea as Friar Laurence. Michael York and Bruce Robinson are also in fine form as, respectively, Tybalt and Benvolio.
I am assuming that most people know the plot of R&J so there's no need for me to go into that. Shakespeare wrote the play somewhere around 1595 and there's a good reason why it's still beloved after 425+ years. While Macbeth is my favorite of Shakespeare's plays, Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet is my favorite filmed version of any of the Bard's works, and the closest to my heart.

JSRReviewed in the United Kingdom on January 26, 20254.0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare for a wide audience.
Like many others of my vintage I first saw this adaptation at Secondary School in relation to the English Literature syllabus (Reel to reel in the school dining hall!). Like virtually every other adolescent male I had an immediate crush on Ms Hussey and I have recently revisited the film after her sad death. Not an exact recreation of the play but it really brought the text to life. Even more than 50 years later it still looks so vibrant. The performances are excellent, none more so than the luminescent Ms Hussey; it's amazing to realise that she was only 15 at the time. There are virtually no 'extras' beyond 2 fascinating interviews, 50 years apart, with Whiting and Hussey. The 15 year old puffing on a ciggie and the 17 year sipping an orange juice (and, apparently, "something") will scandalise a worthy modern audience. Even if you're not a Shakespeare buff, it's a very enjoyable film.
