Purchase options and add-ons

Culled and assembled by Romeyn Beck Hough between 1888 and 1913 in what still remains a stunning and unparalleled achievement, American Woods—originally published in 14 volumes, with actual specimens mounted on card stock—is a work of breathtaking beauty that has set the standard for the study of trees and wood. The Woodbook reproduces, in painstaking facsimile, all of the specimen pages from the original volumes; for this purpose, TASCHEN obtained an extremely rare original set of volumes in very good condition, with minimal damage to the wood cuts.

Arranged in alphabetical order, each tree is broken down into three different cross-section cuts of wood (radial, horizontal, and tangential), demonstrating the particular characteristics of the grain and the wealth of colors and textures to be found among the many different wood types.

Also included in this special edition are lithographs by Charles Sprague Sargent of the leaves and nuts of most trees, as well as texts explaining each tree’s geographical origins and physical characteristics.

Gorgeous presentation in both English and German alongside one another, in conjunction with a complete set of referential images makes this book an absolute must-buy for any number of people.

Naturalists, Wood-Workers and Foresters alike will find plenty to love about this book from the information through to the layout, which hardly requires an aesthetes eye to appreciate for it's utilitarian beauty. Even photographers and art-enthusiasts might find themselves appreciative of the presentation since this timeless classic was originally compiled by a naturalist photographer. Heck, the juxtaposition of English and German in a single presentation offers up the opportunity for linguists to improve their German or English reading comprehension as appropriate.

There is absolutely nothing about this book that is less than exceptional at the price point.

The Woodbook is a true masterpiece. This book is the reprinted, complete collection of wood cuttings that were cut and assembled by Romeyn B. Hough from the 1880's to the 1910's. This books is the compilation of the original 14 volume work that contained 3 actual wood cuts from some 250 tree species. Each wood was cut and mounted on card stock.
This book captures the beauty of all of these woods of which some are now very rare and even extinct.
If you have a love for woods, trees, or even nature in general, this book is for you. Not to mention it is written in English, French, and German, with some tree names in Spanish.

This is an amazing book. Actually, it is an amazing replica of an even more amazing book. The original work described virtually every known species of woody plants (incluing cacti and shrubs) native to North America in three languages (English, German, and French) and accompanied each description with an actual very thin veneer of the wood itself. This replica is a precise reproduction with the exception that instead of wood slices there are superb color photographs of the wood samples.

At the price I paid, I consider this to be an absolute bargain. I highly recommend for anyone who appreciates North American wood.

Index colors are crisper and better than the 2002 edition now giving the number assigned to to the original 1897 edition as well as the plate number for the new edition. The black and gold colors of the text is crisper in this 2019 edition than the 2002 edition which I can't read at all. I wish type colors were black on gold rather than a mix with faded gold on black. It's also missing all the Medicinal Properties entries from the 1897 edition which are historically interesting. Both editions are missing all the Keys to leaves, fruits and flowers that Hough had. A better choice for the reader would have been multiple language editions with each edtition having the complete entries from 1897, especially those Keys to Identification. Photos are still crisp and clear but the text is pretty generic and is much more complete in other books. I paid $100. for the 2002 edition when it came out. It would be worth more if it were truly more complete with information from the descriptions from 1897. I use the color plates from this new edition along with text from "A Guide To Useful Woods of the World" from International Wood Collectors Society and Bruce Hoadleys "Identifying Wood" for cross sections. Years ago I saw a book in a used bookstore of nothing but wood photomicrographs. When I went back to get it ($$), it was gone. Anyone know of that book? I've never seen anything like it again.

This is an absolutely gorgeous book. If you work in wood you will be delighted by this reference; color plates of many wood species are the highlight of the publication and make it an indispensable reference. The book is "coffee table book" quality and I recommend it to all woodworkers and turners. It's a great value.
