Beware the bait and switch!

This book is completely mistitled and misleading. It is really about the Italian effort in North Africa, their TO&E, doctrine, equipment, and leadership. Even the sidebars are almost exclusively about the Italians. Perhaps the author's felt that if they titled the book properly, they wouldn't get half the readers that a book using Rommel's name on the cover would entice. Rommel is almost an afterthought, and usually it is so the authors can point out his mistakes.

However, if you are a serious student of the North African campaign, and not learning anything new anymore about it, then here is a refreshing and arguably overlooked aspect of the desert war that is presented in a readable, well researched study. Unfortunately, the authors seem to stretch what happened to fit their narrative. At rare occurrences amongst the pages covering Italian formations and seemingly an accounting of each casualty they caused the Commonwealth forces, there will be one line or two to describe what Rommel was doing or wanted to do.

New Facts About a Well Known Campaign

This book covers Rommel's efforts in Africa fron the time he started as commander to his final defeat at Alamein. It contains much information about the Italian part in these battles and other aspects not covered well by English language studies of this campaign. I have the highest possible recommendation for this book for those interested in the war in North Africa.

Small book but all good

This is the most information packed book I have ever seen on the desert war (and its from an IT perspective which makes it even more valuable). Its just a 272 page paperback but its full of pictures and maps and facts..facts..facts. It has pictures of many rare Italian equipments and covers the general trend of gun and tank development in the desert and its just packed with details like atrocities and friendly fire incidents in the desert. Also covers battle actions with OOB and action reports. Also of note is the bibliography which gives a one sentence synopsis of about 40 other desert war publications! I wish these authors would put out a large format book with high quality pictures like this! I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in the North Africa theatre from 7/40 to 11/42.

A good perspective on the Italians in WWII

The Italians, as one of the most-mocked military forces of the Second World War, rarely get the depth of treatment that their erstwhile German allies receive. This book focuses on discussing the war in North Africa from the Italian perspective, using Italian sources liberally throughout. Greene and Massignani give a good impression of the state of mind of the Italian soldiery in North Africa. Recommended.
