About the authors

With 19 New York Times bestsellers and more than 350 million copies of his works in circulation, L. Ron Hubbard is among the most enduring and widely read authors of our time. As a leading light of American Pulp Fiction through the 1930s and '40s, he is further among the most influential authors of the modern age. Indeed, from Ray Bradbury to Stephen King, there is scarcely a master of imaginative tales who has not paid tribute to L. Ron Hubbard.
Then too, of course, there is all L. Ron Hubbard represents as the Founder of Dianetics and Scientology and thus the only major religion born in the 20th century.
While, as such, he presents the culmination of science and spiritual technology as embodied in the religion of Scientology.

Andrew Jackson is a writer from Surrey, UK. He writes across a variety of genres, but most of his work embraces science fiction, ranging from speculative, dystopian fiction and space opera to the claustrophobic terror of sci-fi horror.
Drawing on influential films such as Alien and Event Horizon, and videogames like Dead Space and Mass Effect, he’s happiest in space with something unspeakable hunting him. Most of his stories are bleak, disturbing, and a little bit weird.
He has had science fiction and horror stories published with Black Hare Press, Night Terror Novels, and Dark Matter Magazine. Additionally, he has published Project Jotunheim, an aquatic horror novelette, co-authored with Samuel M. Hallam. Most recently, he was featured as a winner in Writers of the Future Volume 41, with his story, Code L1.
Find him on Instagram @authorandrewjackson where he posts all the books he hopes one day to get through, and occasionally some writing too.

Joel C. Scoberg is a winner of the Writers of the Future contest. He lives on the beautiful Gower Peninsula with his very supportive wife, two somewhat feral children, and a growing menagerie of animals. He writes science fiction and fantasy stories but only at night after his children have gone to bed and before he collapses from exhaustion.

Barlow Crassmont has lived in the USA, Eastern Europe, Middle East and China. When not teaching or writing, he dabbles in juggling, solving the Rubik’s Cube, and learning other languages.
He has been published by British Science Fiction Association, Mobius Blvd, Dark Speculations Volume 1, and in the 41st anthology of Writers of the Future.

Lauren McGuire lives in a small southern town where one cannot throw a rock without hitting a church. Ironically, the town is funded by zombies. Growing up as an army brat, she traveled all over the world including a stint in the Middle East which instilled a deep curiosity for other cultures and religions. She began writing in 2016 as a way of processing a chaotic cultural landscape and has since written six full manuscripts and several short stories. When not wrangling a family of five or training for half-marathons, she writes about space and monsters.
She is an active member of the Atlanta Writing Club and their 2020 winner for the Terry Kay prize for short fiction as well as a 2023 runner up for the Natasha Trethewey Prize for Poetry. She received two honorable mentions for the Writers of the Future contest before becoming a finalist. Her story, “Karma Birds,” will be published as part of the Writers of the Future anthology vol 41.

David grew up in Broomall PA, right outside of Philadelphia and not to far from several museums that would direct his love of illustration for the rest of his life. David was raised on adventure stories, magical tales of Lions, Dwarves, Elves, and heroes of all ages. The one thing these stories had in common were amazing pictures illustrated by artists who lived very close to where David first learned to love art.
From N.C. Wyeth, to Jessie Wilcox Smith, and to the legends who are alive today, creating artwork for many more years to come, David revels in his appreciation of art and how it has shaped his foundation.
David loves to create narrative works, that tell the stories between the lines. There is mystery to be found in painting, that represent who an artist is, and how they see the world, and he cannot wait to share his world with you.

Robert F. Lowell is a Writers of the Future winner and Baen Fantasy Adventure Award finalist. His complicated relationship with reality began when he was born between two movie studios in Burbank, California. In previous professional lives he researched and wrote about international relations, weapons of mass destruction, and terrorism. He taught at universities in the US, Costa Rica, and Switzerland and was kissed by a dancing horse in Siberia. Now he expands the universe of online learning as an instructional systems designer and writes about swords, sorcery, robots, aliens, and magic rabbits as a member of the Wulf Pack Writers. He, his wife, and at least one dog live in a town with very expensive weather on California’s Central Coast and travel in search of enchantment.

Cam Collins is a printmaker, illustrator, and writer. He is the creator of The Way of the Canvas, a world that encapsulates the rules of his artwork and its mechanics. Based in the USA, he continues to share this visual language and world that he has been captivating clients and audiences with through various mediums including paintings, album covers, video games, comics, and sculptures.

Seth Atwater Jr is a fantasy author and one of many talented winners of the Writers of the Future contest. His winning story, "A World of Repetitions," is published in L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future volume 41.
Seth lives in the middle of nowhere in the US state of Missouri with his family, including his parents, five of seven siblings, a brother-in-law, two nephews, and four cats (who basically count as nephews and nieces, since they belong to his sister). His home is part of a larger family farm, so he has always been surrounded by supportive grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, to whom he attributes a large amount of the success he has found thus far in life.
Seth's hobbies mostly include writing and writing-adjacent stuff like reading and watching movies/anime. He also enjoys running, as well as all kinds of gaming, from board games to video games to D&D.
Don’t let Seth near a keyboard with parentheses on it—he is guaranteed to overuse them (heavily).

Tremani Sutcliffe, spent her early years exploring the rugged landscapes of Arizona, where hiking in desert mountains and catching rattlesnakes ignited her adventurous spirit.
Her passion for art stemmed from her love of books and the fantastical covers that inspired her imagination. In true bookworm fashion, her artistic journey began at the local library, where she immersed herself in art instruction books. Through daily practice, relentless pursuit of new skills, and seeking mentorship from established artists, her commitment to learning new methods has continuously expanded her artistic repertoire. Tremani views art as a fusion of technique and creativity that brings beauty and meaning to life.
After spending most of her young life drawing and painting with watercolors, she expanded her skill set to include oils. Although she also began working with acrylics, she quickly decided they must have been invented by an angry dude with horns and a pitchfork for the sole purpose of making her life miserable . . . and decided to develop her digital painting skills instead.

T.R. Naus emerged from a love of exploration. He grew up traveling across Europe, Asia, and the United States as a military brat and a soldier in the U.S. Army, developing a passion for wandering, adventures, and intriguing stories in the process. His journey led him to experience fascinating cultures and subcultures, where he learned from inspiring people, but with each new encounter, he wondered how evolving technology impacts how we see ourselves and the communities around us. He eventually settled in Virginia with his wife and two daughters and turned to speculative fiction to express those anxieties – and hopes – about our future.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2025Writers of the Future Volume 41 is a thrilling showcase of talent from rising stars in speculative fiction. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the stories from these award-winning authors, each bringing fresh perspectives and gripping narratives.
Among the standout pieces for me was “Slip Stone" by Sandra Skalski—a masterful time-travel tale packed with suspense that kept me on edge until its deeply satisfying conclusion. Equally compelling was “Kill Switch" by Robert F. Lowell, which explored the ethical dilemma of a robot forced to act against its programming and, in essence, its will. Thought-provoking and beautifully written, this story lingered in my mind long after I finished reading.
The illustrations accompanying each tale were stunning and wonderfully captured the essence of the stories. Additionally, I found the authors' biographies truly inspiring, providing insight into their journeys and creative processes.
Overall, this anthology is a must-read for fans of speculative fiction and anyone who appreciates imaginative, high-quality storytelling. Highly recommend!

The anthology even includes professional writing advice and an opportunity to make your mark through its free anonymous contest every quarter.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2025I love reading SciFi because it makes me think about life and the world in a way other inputs (real and fictional) do not.
New writers are especially fun as they bring fresh insights and ways of telling their tales. This year's collection is quite good and very relevant, with stories about robots, AI, time travel and spaceships putting a focus on humanity and society.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2025L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writer's Of The Future: Vol 41 is the book we are reviewing today y'all. In the past, we have had the pleasure of reviewing the previous anthologies and really liked them overall, so for us to review this newest one was a no-brainer. Writers Of The Future for those new to these books, is an anthology of short stories specifically involving sci-fi and fantasy, the best of the year!
We will giving you our thoughts on several stories from the anthology, of course with no spoilers! You must buy the book to read the stories and find out what happens.
The first story that we are talking about is entitled "The Boy From Elsewhen" by Barlow Crassmont. This story is an amazing short story that casts a glimpse into a Dystopian future where technology has caused the atrophy of the human mind. This story wonderfully explores how an example of life from the past can help bring back sanity at least in one person's life in a corrupted world. The writing style was highly engaging and though the story was short the ending left me with a hopeful outlook that even in the darkest of times, a seed can sprout and come to fruition.
The second story is called "Ascii" by Randyn C. Bartholomew. Ascii is an enlightening story that asks the question through it's narrative "What if AI was truly devoted to serving humans so much so that it became infused with the devouring mother archetype?" "Ascii" in my opinion asked an incredibly profound question "Would AI in that circumstance truly have the best interest of people at heart? If it would kill humans for the "greater good", or like us, humans, would the 'greater good' simply be a mask to protect one's kind or interests. And would AI, like us, delude itself into thinking murder, cancelling, and ceinture is justified to suppress 'dangerous ideas'." The story revolves around an AI cab driver who is at the utmost concerned with the every need, want, and desire of his passenger. And a passenger who has a fierce passion for the dignity and sanctity of the human spirit, who wishes to rebel against a system of comfort and the road that they share together. The Passenger character is very relatable in our current society and this story left me asking a question. "At what point is censorship justified and at what point do good intentions pave the way to hell?"
The third and final story we will talk about with this anthology is entitled "The Stench of Freedom" by Joel C. Scoberg. This story was an absolute page turner, my attention was captivated from the very first page to the last! In a steampunk like world/noir story that marries fantasy elements such as gods, bloodline wizardry, and elemental magic in a fantastic setting to explore the lore. The story is about the MC, Heywel, who is an Earther who commands Earth magic in the service of the Earther guild. In this world, society is comprised of have's and have not's. The Earther's guild is tasked with ensuring the city has electricity and thereby industry/power. But at what cost?? Hywel, a career driven top man of the Earther guild, learns very keenly the price of progress and industry in the city. The story wrestles with the callousness that success brings and the love and empathy in the human heart that can blossom as a result of being cast from the lofty heights of society. Hywel is faced with the choice of being the hero that society wants him to be or to be the hero that his family needs him to be.
All in all, the stories in Writers Of The Future Vol 41 are refreshing and filled with optimism about the human spirit and finding the right path even when circumstances are against you. Through the anthology there was a thread that outlines when people make the appropriate self sacrifice they almost always gain what they need even if it is not what they think that they want.
We highly recommend Writers Of the Future Vol 41 to all fans of great sci- fi and fantasy readers! We know you will love this one folks!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2025The 41st volume of L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future continues the anthology's tradition of showcasing exceptional new voices in speculative fiction. This collection offers a delightful mix of imagination, originality, and skill, with stories that span a wide emotional and thematic range.
From lighthearted and whimsical to deeply haunting, the stories in this volume keep readers on their toes. Each story is carefully written, with well-executed pacing that makes it easy to get lost in the narratives. The authors succeed in crafting worlds and characters that are both immersive and thought-provoking.
The illustrations not only capture the essence of the narratives but also enhance the emotional depth of the reading experience, making this volume even more engaging.
In conclusion, Volume 41 is a highly entertaining anthology that brings fresh perspectives and exciting new voices to the sci-fi and fantasy genres. Whether you’re drawn to light escapism or darker, more introspective tales, there’s something here for everyone.

Heidi IReviewed in Australia on April 23, 20255.0 out of 5 stars This is a must-read anthology!
This is my third year of reading Writers of the Future and once again, it doesn't disappoint!
Anthologies are one of my favourite ways to devour small bites of sci-fi/fantasy stories - you get such a great variety and just enough out of each author that you want to go looking at what else they have in their catalogue.
I don't think I read one short story that had me skimming to the end, which let's be honest, is a rarity in anthologies. The other element of these volumes that I just love are the illustrations that accompany each work of fiction. The art styles from work to work are to varied and unique in their own way that they really do just add a little something extra to each piece. They are such a delight to stumble across during each narrative.
I always like to recommend anthologies for anyone wanting to venture into the SSF genre, or anyone starting to read adult SSF - it is a great yet slow introduction to the genre and really helps you figure out what kind of SSF you mesh well with.
Definitely get your hands on a copy of Writers of the Future Volume 41!

The Writers of the Future(WOTF) anthology series is one of the most unique writing contests ever. For 40 years now, new writers and artists have been given a wide exposure platform to display their talent. Year in and out, the new blood never fails to impress. There are 12 excellent new stories here and it is up to you, the reader, to discover which ones are your favorites. In addition, there are 3 story reprints from L. Ron Hubbard, Tim Powers, and Sean Williams.
It is important to point out that the WOTF anthology is more than just a potential springboard for new writers. It is also a showcase for new illustrators. Each winning story receives an accompanying illustration - each beautifully capturing an important moment in each story.
There are also writing advice articles from professionals such as L. Ron Hubbard, Robert J. Sawyer, and Tom Wood. This makes each volume a treasure chest for new writers and artists. These books are also a time capsule of the year they are released in. Going back to previous volumes is a wonderful way of revisiting the issues of the day.
For aspiring writers this is a great way to check out what and where your peers are at. You can also see what quality of writing is needed to break through. There's no entry fee and if you win, there's a wonderful week in LA for the banquet and presentation plus classes by the WOTF judges - many who are giants in the SF and Fantasy fields.
My favorite stories are, in no particular order, Ascii, A World of Repetitions, and Slip Stone. It's really hard to pick favorites though as all the stories are stellar. Which ones will be your favorites? Only one way to find out!
Sandra van der PlaatsReviewed in Germany on May 3, 20255.0 out of 5 stars Stellar stories and art work and yet another brilliant anthology!
Writers of the Future is an anthology of ‘ visionaries of what is next in the world, either through art or the written word.’.
Personally, I got Titanic-, HG Wells- , and Groundhog Day- vibes from some of the stories, and was pleasantly surprised more than once, and as with any anthology, there were a few stories that I didn’t like: There are long stories in here, which IMHO could have been a little bit shorter, while some of the short stories could have been a little bit longer.
Anyway, there is something for everyone and the seasoned SF/Fantasy fan will enjoy another brilliant collection of stories and artwork!
Each story in this anthology is preceded by a brief summary, of who and why? of the writer and the artist.
I never read this information. At the back of the book the included artwork is described in detail; Besides, I like to be surprised and rather go in "blind" and prefer not to read these intros.
I am not a fan of fantasy myself (although there was one story in there that I really loved! but more on that later...), other more fantasy oriented stories I skipped to maybe try again later. My heart is with SF.
This anthology kicks off right away with a wonderful story that is a little bit like "Twelve Monkeys". Going back in time to fix "something" never yields the desired result, so unfortunately for this protagonist ...
In the second story, the lovers do not live in sync with time and try to leave notes...
The story "Tough Old Man playing on the planet Ooglach" was really one of my favourite stories in this anthology. I loved the twist at the end. (‘Ooglach’ in Dutch already gives a bit of a clue 🙂
Karma Birds is a mix between Earth Abides and The Birds - as a Hitchcock fan I could appreciate this one, unfortunately the story was tad short :(.
Total societal collapse and you must stay away from...strangers and ....
** no spoilers **
The Boy from Elsewhere I thought was moving - about excluding what we don't understand, and a warning to our current generations that seems to be born with an Iphone in hand.
And then, for me, one the very best story in this collection: Code L1 -
A group of travellers arrive on the planet AC-211 - the code means there is life on the planet. As we are 70% water, a trip to these parts seems quite a challenge to me. Though some will actually embrace the transition that seems to have happend here. Awesome story! and fortunately nice and long.
Also included a kind of essay about the pioneers of SF, of course: Mary Shelley (The Last Man on Earth) (1826) and my all-time favourite author H.G. Wells.
There are indeed a number of stories that have used the time machine as a basis for their story, although sometimes in a different way: .....
Not really a fan of fantasy, but I liked The Storm of Freedom - albeit violent at the start - where Sparkies - people who (can) generate electricity - have no place in society, they only serve for anything that needs electricity. When a prominent Earther has a son who turns out to be a Sparkie, all hell breaks loose and the family has to flee for their lives. The story was exciting and moving, and I really loved this one.
Another of my favourite stories is My Name was Tom - the cover on the front reminds me a bit of this "ship".
It's a speculative story that (intentionally?) taps into several emotions, for example, The Grand Salon immediately made me think of the Titanic, yet this "ship" is a bit weird.
This story was the biggest surprise to me, in my opinion it could have been a novel long. It also reminded me a little bit of Piranesi, too.
Wonderful story - brilliant drawing to go with it. Absolutely brilliant!
Another stellar collection of talented writers and artists. 6 stars. ******
Already looking forward to next year’s edition.

I have to admit that I am an avid fan of Writers of the Future series of books and Volume 41 Kindle edition has to be one of my favourites. The stories from the winning authors are exceptionally enjoyable throughout the book, from classic science fiction tales to more speculative fiction that ignited my imagination. Each story takes the reader on a different path, sometimes amusing, sometimes chilling and to be honest downright incredible in their approach to the fiction we are used to. As always there are 3 bonus short stories included by L Ron Hubbard – Robert J Sawyer – Tom Wood. I thoroughly enjoyed The Tough Old Man by L Ron Hubbard first published in 1950 science fiction magazine Startling Stories. The story is illustrated by Dwayne Harris a previous winner back in 2001. Here we have a hardened and at times a ruthless law enforcer and a rookie constable straight from training school. How do they get on? I’ll let you read this story for yourself, but I’ll say this, it’s very, very good indeed. There is powerful prose within these pages of speculative fiction that will without a doubt stimulate your mind. The judges have done an excellent job in the selection of these cutting edge winning entries by talented writers along with an illustration of each story contained within this marvellous anthology of science fiction short stories. In conclusion if you enjoy a varied selection of speculative science fiction, then this collection of remarkable short stories contained within the pages of Writers of the Future Vol. 41 is definitely a ‘must read’. The book is also available in paperback and there is an audio edition.
