I grew-up in, and spent a good part of my life in Ronkonkoma. Back in the late 60's and 70's when I was a kid, there were still a lot of the landmarks and remnants of it's glorious past, which are documented in this book! I was hesitant to buy this book at first, figuring that the pictures would be the same ones which I've seen for years on the internet....but they're not! (O-K, a small percentage are...but not most!). Or I thought perhaps half the book would be occupied by pics of the ubiquitous Agnew & Taylor Hardware store (There are some, but the book is not dominated by them- thankfully!)

I can sit with this book and daydream about my wonderful childhood in the still-glorious 60's and 70's when Ronkonkoma was still a nice mix of rural charm and suburbia, and yet only 60 miles from NYC. My mother and I would walk to the lake on hot summer days; passing many of the remnants of Ronkonkoma's hey-day; and I'd even play on the ruins of the pavillians at the beach. I can even see my childhood home in several of the photographs- which is the first opportunity in my life I've had the pleasure to see what my former home and neighborhood looked like prior to myself having lived there!

The author's employment of several of James Mooney's wonderful aerial photographs from the 50's and 60's was a natural! One could only wish he would have used more of them, as nothing captures the essence of the place like those photographs! (Some of you may remember, back when Robin's Hardware was still extant, the owner, Georgie Erotakis(sp?) had a bunch of Mr. Mooney's photographs displayed along his counter. It was such a treat just to go in there to buy a nut or bolt, and spend an hour looking at the photos and talking to George and his wife!

It is good to see the village of Lake Ronkonkoma as it looked in the 1940's when I was growing up there. Other pictures show the village in earlier and in later decades. One can re-live memories of beaches all around the lake from pictures in this book.

An excellently constructed chronicle of Lake Ronkonkoma from its formation 17,000 years ago to present day. Tons of pictures of founding fathers, their homes & development of Beach pavillions ( all gone now ) & restaurants no longer around. Having vacationed there in the mid 1950s through late 60s, vivid memories of those days are rekindled through the photos. If you have a Ronkonkoma connection or merely want to learn about the lake, I highly recommend this book

Having spent many summers at Lake Ronkonkoma, NY, I snapped this book up as soon as I knew it was on the market. It has great stories and many wonderful pictures. Before moving upstate New York, I went out to the Lake for one last time and it was not like I remembered it at all. Gone were the pavilions, private beaches, lakeside homes, slides and floats, and hotels. That is why I cherish this book so I can relive those happy summers at Lake Ronkonkoma. If you loved the Lake as much as I did, this is a must-have.

I love history and enjoy this style of book because it gives me a basic history, shows how places have grown and changed, and often has encouraged me to learn more about the area.
