This book exploded with chemistry from start to finish. ForePlay was great, and I liked Leo and Chloe a lot, but this book was at a whole different level. The sexual chemistry was nothing short of smoldering from the very first scene, and even though it took a while to get to the actual act, the build up to it, and Dex's constant sex-on-the-brain, was incredibly hot without being over the top or freaky. If you're a reader who is put off by anything “too kinky” in their books, do not worry, this book will make your heart race and your palms sweat without pushing kink boundaries.
The chemistry between Ava and Dex was palpable from the start, there is no question about that. I wish that there had been a few scenes where they were together and sex wasn't involved, where Dex looked at Ava and didn't think about her sexually just to show that their intense connection goes deeper than him lusting over her non-stop rather than just being told that it does, but that's not the kind of book that this is, so that wasn't a deal-breaker for me. Without spoiling anything, Oz and Leo's reactions to the fact that Dex and Ava were together were so perfect for each character, and Letitia was fabulous - as always. I liked the foreshadowing to Oz's book, and I cannot wait to see Oz meet the woman who will bring him to his knees.
On a side note, I cannot believe that I only *just now* realized the boys' last names are Foxx, Moore and Strong. Like Dex when his brain is Ava-addled, I'm super quick the uptake.
In my opinion, this book is the hottest one that Shelly Alexander has written to date. Not just because of the forbidden romance factor, but because of the chemistry between Dex and Ava, and because the book is written solely from Dex's point of view – something that is hot and does not happen enough in this genre. This series is different from Ms. Alexander's other books, but I like that she has branched out and I am looking forward to book three of this series.
I was lucky enough to win an ARC of this book from the author in a contest, and was under absolutely no obligation to write this review. I wrote the review because the book is great – and smoking hot.
A company that started with biologically engineered cologne for men that is specifically designed to produce supercharged pheromone production in women has to be the most brilliant stupid idea on the planet. Sort of like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Blondie’s smile turns evil. I half expect her to put a curse on us and fly from the room on a broomstick.
Rookie Moves provided an extremely clever premise, an entertaining storyline, and an afternoon of naughty fun. I totally relished the brilliant idea of nerds receiving makeovers. The storyline was amusing, bawdy, sensual, and emotive. Written from the first person POV of Dex, the main character was a sexy playboy that had been a high school nerd, chess champion, and a lonely intellectual genius of a child with cold and distant parents. Dex was one of the three founding members of Checkmate, the company that started off with cologne but expanded into a networked enterprise that polished the rough edges and assisted wealthy geeks with rebranding themselves into buff metro-sexuals. Dex was whip-smart and had a dirty mouth and an even filthier mind packed with X-rated fantasies starring Ava, the younger sister of his business partner/best friend. The f-bombs frequently flew once he learned it was a turn-on for Ava. Dex had been secretly lusting for Ava for over two years but unable to do anything about it as, well, best friend’s sister. Imagine his shock once he realized his fantasies had nothing on Ava’s reality. She was no mental slouch herself and brought out the best in him in every way, and my kindle was smoking!
Ava is sweet and sassy, and strong willed to boot. She's finally going after what she wants, and while Dex tries to "do the right thing" (someone please save us from these noble guys!), he's been fighting this temptation for far too long. The two of them together will either overheat your e-reader or if you're reading the paperback it may very well burst into flames. Chemistry? They have it in spades.
While the story does follow a predictable route, it is the writing that makes it stand out, and I thought it flowed very well. I read it in one evening, and even though it was a quick read for me, it never felt rushed. Ava and Dex already have a long history of close friendship, the events in this story just give them that nudge over the edge.
4 stars for Rookie Moves, and I recommend this to any romance fans-particularly if you love the tropes that are represented. This book is strictly for readers 18+ for adult language (boy Dex can sure dirty talk with the best of them!) and explicit erotic sexual content.
