Both were really wonderful stories, if a bit painful at times. But, knowing Laura and Seth’s story helped me understand Laura’s insight into her daughters terrible dilemma.
“You know Laura Lynn, our God is a jealous God, you love something more than him he is bound to take it away.”
At twenty one Laura met the love of her life. After having broken up with her boyfriend and temporarily resting in a park, she's hit in the face with a frisbee. Seth is at first turned off by Laura's bad attitude, but when the two randomly meet again later that night, they see another side of each other and form a connection.
After months of dating despite their differences (Laura being a wild girl and a bit of a partier, Seth being more conservative and a hard worker) the two are in love and going strong. But Seth's past continues to haunt their present relationship and the two find themselves at odds on where their life path leads them.
“I’m a firm believer that if you want something, you have to make it happen. The world owes you nothing, but you can take your piece of it. All you have to do is work hard and claim it.”
This book was the perfect angst hit for all of you angst lovers out there like me. I loved Laura and Seth's story, I honestly could feel their love for each other, it was a very powerful romance. Seth and Laura worked well together despite their differences and worked hard on lowering their defenses around each other. I loved the first part of this book to about 70/75%, while the last 25% or so didn't flow as well for my tastes.
Laura was my favorite part about this book, I love imperfect heroines and she felt like a real person to me. She didn't want to spend her life spewing out falsities so she did what she wanted. Small warning, Laura did some recreational drug use but it honestly didn't bother me all too much because well, that's life and people use drugs. Reality of our world and all.
The only thing preventing me from giving this book a full 5 stars is the whole not enough groveling thing I'm always getting on about. Seth messes up big time in my opinion and he honestly didn't grovel as much as I'd like. I also didn't understand a lot of his reasoning and decisions for the things he did, maybe because I didn't have his perspective. Laura I understood a lot more, but probably because I was able to see her side of things.
I read Loving the White Liar before this book and while I enjoyed that one, this one left a mark on my heart. For those of my friends who love angsty romance reads, I highly recommend this book. I think fans of RK Lilley will enjoy Kate Stewart's work very much.
"So there’s no hero for you?
"I am my own hero.”
Laura is a bit of a free-spirited rebel. She doesn't like being confined into societal expectations or compartments. She paves her own way and that includes working a job of her own choosing with no clear goals in life. She's independent, smart-mouthed and emotionally guarded. She meets Seth and even he's a bit turned off by her attitude at first. Seth is hard-working, intellectual and responsible. He's the opposite of Laura, he has a plan with clear cut life goals and benchmarks to achieve.
I don't think they are drawn to each other because opposites attract, although in this case they do, it's much more than that. The connection is very tangible and real because what should frustrate them about each other, they accept and love about the other. I thought their communication was a bit stunted at times, because Seth wasn't always telling Laura everything and she had to figure it out for herself, which only led to destruction for both of them because Seth couldn't let go of his plans.
After 14 years, they meet again and Laura is a different person, but so is Seth. Life experiences firsthand have taught them them a lot. I couldn't get past Seth's actions, though, I expected more from him so I wasn't sure if he ever really redeemed himself in my eyes. He did something shady while he was dating Laura in the past and then again when he lost her. Laura isn't exempt from poor behavior either, but she wasn't shady about it. She's worked hard to be where she is today and the irony about Laura is how she tried so hard to not be a certain type of person and she's made major strides, but she could easily be stereotyped still. Will they succumb to their love this time around or do they still have too many obstacles between them? For fans of second chance romance with messy and slightly dysfunctional storylines, then this could be for you.

The book is well written, as always, but Seth just seemed a bit too selfish and I couldn’t really understand him. Or perhaps I could but I just didn’t like or empathise with what I understood. And likewise with Laura, she was a bit too much of a spoilt brat for my liking, too little appreciation of the privilege she had. And the stuff with Paul, without wanting to give too much away, they seemed to have very little interaction that justified his feelings.

A huge thank you to Kate Stewart for such an excellent story, with lovable characters that are just so easy to fall in love with.
I get so much pleasure from reading a good book especially when you want to give a book more than 5* and this little gem was definitely worthy of more than 5* maybe even 212 stars :) .
If you haven't read this why not ? It's the full package plus so much more and is well worth the money, I would have quite willingly paid more.

Very well written and so enjoyable to read.
