Editorial Reviews

Hidden in the woods is an abandoned institution where many suffered horrible deaths. It is also where a group of road trippers are forced to settle for the night, and where someone is waiting for them—Roxy, a deranged, abused girl with a deadly secret. As the institution takes on a life of its own and mutilated bodies are discovered, the group races to learn Roxy's story and uncover a savage killer in their midst.

In any horror movie it's understood that there will be poor decisions. Usually the lower the portrayed characters morals, the poorer the decisions (and the earlier the character is killed). It's also understood that there needs to be some level of suspended disbelief.

Unfortunately, this movie not only makes a mockery of those liberties but it does it with obnoxious characters, awful acting and an embarrassingly bad script.

Just to give you an idea...Warning: There are spoilers...if you want to call them that. Since there is nothing about this movie that you don't already know within 30 seconds of watching. There are NO spoilers. But, for the sake of argument I'll issue the warning.

These are the questions that immediately came to my mind and that I just could not overcome. And these were all in the first 20 minutes.

First: WHO, after running out of gas “In the middle of nowhere” would decide that was the appropriate time to lace up the ‘ol roller skates and head out for a leisurely stroll…alone? Probably the same person who a few minutes later is laying on her back in the middle of the road, doing sit ups. Did I really just see that?

WHAT level of sense and intelligence must a person have to choose to sleep in an abandoned mental institution over a passenger van that would easily be seen by any passing car? “Alright, let’s crash here and go for gas in the morning.” That was an actual line. And everybody seems fine with that except the African American guy who is about as "cliche black guy in a horror movie" as you can get.

WHERE, on a trip from California to Portland, would you encounter “no service.” Who plotted this trip? If you're going from LA (or anywhere else in CA) to Portland, OR it's a pretty straightforward trip.

You've seen this story many times, but that doesn't mean you won't enjoy it yet again.

A group of young people (including some eye candy) travel in the forest. Their car breaks down. They wander about and find an abandoned ... (in this case, it's an asylum -- but it could as easily have been a house, hospital, prison, high school, military base, etc.). Night falls. A supernatural entity begins killing them, one by one ...

The young people in this case are a roller derby team (the eye candy) and their roadies. And a young couple they meet along the way. It's the usual disparate bunch. The tough girl, smart girl, scared girl, horny guy, nice guy, black guy -- yes, "black" is a character trait in low-budget horror films.

Along the way, they also meet a crazy girl.

This crazy girl knows about the supernatural entity. This entity seems inspired by The Ring and The Grudge. Initially, we only glimpse it as it rushes the victim, who is suddenly both dead and grotesquely deformed. Not deformed in as original a way as the victims are in The Ring -- ROOM 33's makeup effects are low-budget. (Later on, we see this creature's M.O. in more detail, so its victims' wounds make more sense.)

ROOM 33 is a forgettable film, and not too original. But it's entertaining and enjoyable. Some nicely creepy atmosphere, and professional acting.

This is a difficult movie to review. The reason it is difficult to review is because I have watched just about all the good horror movies out there and I am really struggling to find things to watch which are simply tolerable. What is intolerable to me? Shaky camera movies inspired by reality tv. You know the type. No real effort put into them. Looks like they could be shot by anyone without any budget whatsoever. This movie, for all the shortcomings it certainly did possess, is far superior to almost every shaky camera horror flick out there. But how does it fare next to a great or even a fairly good horror film? Not so well. I would certainly suggest this movie to anyone who is in a situation like me--you have just about seen it all in horror, but as horror is your top genre, you enjoy seeing mediocre films. If you are just fine with almost any genre but you want the film to be solidly written and/or thought provoking, this isn't the film for you. You would be better off with a nice drama or action flick. Keep that in mind and if you do decide to watch Room 33, just lower your expectations a bit, accept it for what it is, and enjoy the ride.

Unfortunate waste of a perfectly creepy abandon desolate and labyrinth psychiatric hospital. Annoying characters abound and the ending is about as unsatisfying as it gets. The characters behavior and reactions to the situation they are in is ludicrous. The mystery is never explored beyond some smattering of scant clues about "Room 33:. "Room 33" being the title of the film one would expect it to be explored in a bit of depth, it isn't.

That's unfortunate because forbidden experiments in psychiatric hospitals are fertile ground for some of the best supernatural horror stories and my favorite genre.
