One Art Blakey's greatest albums with the Jazz Messengers, Roots & Herbs, is little known. In 1961, the group featured Lee Morgan (trumpet), Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Bobby Timmons (piano) and Jymie Merrit (bass). Recorded in Rudy Van Gelder's New Jersey studio, it's a brilliant set of six Shorter compositions, like the playful "Ping Pong" and the clever "United." It's among Blakey's finest. Blue Note Tone Poet Series features all-analog, remastered 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.

I'll admit I had not really listened to Blakey prior, but knew that the Blue Note Tone Poets series was a quality line, and with Kevin Grey being responsible for the remaster, I jumped in.
Man, am I happy with this! Beautiful tip-on gatefold; brilliant sounding, flat disc, quiet, but full sound and the energy of this group just makes me smile the whole way through!
The stereo is really, really seperated. I'm listening in headphones, and they have the sax and the trumpet completely divided on the left and right which can be a little odd when the one is soloing and it seems nothing is happening stage right or left, but when they are playing together!! Wow!!! Just a tight, but upbeat, groove laden, stroll through some blissful jazz runs.
