I really loved this book. I started reading it, and didn’t want to put it down until it was finished. Rose and Dan were interesting characters, and fairly well fleshed out considering how short the book is. I also really liked Jaren. It bugged me a little bit that Jaren’s mother was never named, anytime she was spoken of, or thought about, everyone called her “milady”.

It was a little strange that the castles were so identical, but it wasn’t odd enough to throw me out of the story. I would have liked to know a little more about Haneh, but again due to the length of the book, that’s understandable. There was a lot of info and action, without it being too over the top.

I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on the next book. Oh! And did I mention dragons? And wizardry, and magical healing. Dungeons and sword fights, with a dash of romance at the end.

I would highly recommend reading this book.

I loved this novella! The characters were well developed, the story cohesive and well paced. The very worst thing I can say about this is that it ended! I really wanted to read more, but then, all of the books I've read by Cate are that way...doesn't matter how long they are, I always want more!!

What a lovely love story. Then wait we have danger and mystery. The book even throws in the supernatural. What more could you ask for? As usual Cate Dean throws in every element you need to draw in almost any reader. She has a way of blending all of the elements together along with well developed characters to make a book that is impossible to forget. As always, she leaves you wanting to read more. I have read almost every book she has written; I enjoy her work that much. I have never read one of her books that left me saying "Really I read all of that for nothing. I will never get that time back." I always say "NEXT". She is an amazing writer who just gets better with time.

Don't let the YA Fantasy `label' fool or deter you from this wonderful novella! Author Cate Dean does an amazing job of putting the reader right in the castle with Rose, Dan and Jaren as they traverse their harrowing ordeal. The characters are well-drawn, the plot believable for the genre, and the writing will not let you stop reading until you've reached the end. I also enjoyed the excerpt for Dean's next book and will buy a copy as soon as it's available. I highly recommend you pick up a copy and enjoy this one for yourself.

For her birthday Rosamond wants to visit a haunted castle and see if the legends she read about in books are true. Is there really a sorcerer trapped within its walls? Rose and Dan get way more than they bargained for and quickly realize they need to fight for their lives as well as that of their prince and put their trust in talking walls if they hope to escape alive.

This is a very fast paced adventure full of magic, compassion and trust. It was very well written and extremely descriptive. Cate Dean makes the world come to life and lets you really "see" everything that is happening as its happening. There is some switching of characters POV so you really get the big picture of how dire their situation. I think this would have made an excellent novel with some more background about Haneh and how he came to be trapped inside the castle's walls, possibly a flashback or two of Rose's before she came to be a lady in waiting for the Queen, and of course more background on Arthur and why he kidnapped Prince Jaren.

One thing that really bothered me while reading this; the Queen is never given an actual name. She is always referred to as "milady", which I found extremely annoying towards the end. Despite this small nuance, I really enjoyed reading this novella, it kept me entertained throughout and I did not want to put it down till I was done. I was happily surprised by the ending, as I thought things were going to turn out differently, but for all the torture and fear that dominate the first ¾'s of the story it has a very happily-ever-after type of ending.
