I loved this movie, but the format was wrong. You'de think that after so many people having the exact same problem with the format of an AMERICAN MADW MOVIE, this company would do something to make it clear and close to the top of the page. A lot of people don't realize that there are detailed descriptions below the first screen. So, we all thought we were ordering an American made movie for an American audience. Need to ADVERTISE at the very top this will not play in certain regions and not bury this information in the description. now...it's offered for pennies. Because who would purposely buy something that will not play in America????? No body! Will never buy from this company again. I wasn't even aware I was purchasing from another country. So, how does the exchange rate work? Well, I wasn't given that option. I have bought items from Europe before and I always look up the exchange rate before the purchase. The country has always listed the origin of the product as well, so I know full well where it is coming from. You need to seriously fix this problem. There are enough customer that have been confused by your
advertising of this product. Altho, you probably won't read this, as none of us have had a response to our complaint.

Editorial Reviews
In an Oscar-nominated performance, Bette Midler portays a rock star whose success is laced with so much booze, drugs and hard-living, it eventually causes her downfall. Trapped in a self-created hell Rose begs her manager (Alan Bates) for time off from her concert tour. When he refuses, she seeks compfort and love in the arms of a handsome driffter (Frederic Forrest), but even he cannot handle her life of excess. Electrifying musical numbers, including the hit song "The Rose" make the film a pop culture classic.

Outstanding movie; should have won Academy Award for best picture, and Bette should have won best actress. Alan Bates deserved best supporting actor. Fantastic character study; fantastic acting throughout; and fantastic soundtrack. Movies like "A Star is Born", in all its several iterations, pale in comparison. A very truthful telling.

This about real life. No fantasy about stardom! If you don’t this real look at Amy Whinehouse!!

I think in her profession there are so many obtainable drugs. Also that live style they live (where your constantly on the move) you body can only handle so much stress. Managers make money from the stars performances so keeps them performing until exhaustion. As far as Bette Medler she is magnificent in the role. I wish would have won the academy award!!

I saw this in 79 I guess when it hit the theatres on its first run.....I got the DVD on a whim and just finished watching it for the second time. My thoughts:
Bette turns in a fantastic performance............I guess this was her first film and what a debut!
I saw Janis Joplin at concert once and Bette does a pretty good job of channeling her.................I may be biased, but Janis sang much better.
Alan Bates is just terrific as her manager.........this guy is good in everything I have seen him in.
The movie needed more Harry Dean Stanton..............what an actor!...in his short time on the screen as the country singer/songwriter Billy Ray he sure makes an impact.
The concert footage is amazing..................only a film like Last Waltz which is a real concert documentary surpasses The Rose.
The music is great!!! Very nostalgic for me.
My only quibble is it loses some pace before the final concert............overall I recommend this film highly.

The cd of the Rose that I received would not play in either of my players. It said something about not playing in my region. I was not aware of any regional differences that would cause a cd to not play in one region from another.

That the Devine Miss M turned so mainstream is ironic, but her vocal efforts on this soundtrack are fabulous. The story is more depressing than I remembered it, but Bette Midler should have gotten an Oscar. Lots of people say The Last Waltz is the greatest rock & roll movie ever (& I am a huge Band & Levon Helm fan), but I'll take The Rose as a truer representation of an era.

this is a fantastic movie as many have said prior to this review but the quality of the DVD sucks. It looks like it was copied from VHS onto a DVD . . . bad, bad, bad. I don't understand why and mine is not a lemon, they are all like this. The poor quality of the DVD makes it hard to watch the movie.

Outstanding film and a must buy for any Bette Midler fan

I have been a fan of Bette Midler for years however owing to my age and the fact this film came out before I was born I hadn't seen it until recently when I decided to give it a go. I didn't really know anything about it other than it was was loosely based on the life of rock singer Janis Joplin. The film is Bette Midler's first and she was quite rightly nominated for an Oscar for her role (she should of won it). Bette Midler is wonderful as Rose, the rock singer whose fraught relationship with her manager who (who refuses to grant her time off) and her partner sees her life spiral out of control. The concerts scenes are amazing and Bette quite clearly demonstrates what a fantastic singer she really is. This film is where Bette's well known hit, "The Rose" originates. Bette also demonstrates a wonderful flare for acting, and her portrayal of the character is superb. This film is one of the most powerful, most emotional films I have ever seen. A box of tissues will be required, especially for the end.

I saw this film when it first came out and loved it . It stayed with me for years and I wanted to watch it again. This time instead of seeing Rose as a feisty young woman broken by the insiduous business she had willingly chosen to enter, I found her a selfish brat! Seems I have grown up, but Rose is trapped by celluloid. Bette Midler is still outstanding as Rose, but the brash scenes are not a million miles from her stage act of the time. Where she excels is in portraying the total disintegration of this desperately lonely, needy girl , who manages to alienate even those trying to reach her . An incredibly sad story , very well acted , but of its day .

Young Bette Midler at her best. I was a Janis Joplin fan so for me this is brilliant. I know it is not meant to be a biopic of Joplins life but it mirrored the latter stages of her career fairly closely, It does not have the production quality of Diana Rosses portrayal of Billy Holiday in The Lady Sings the Blues but the resemblance is unmistakable and Midler played the role really well.
For anyone who did not know Joplin it does not really let you see her at her best and there is no wherer near enough hard rock music in it
For me it was a trip down memory lane and one I will be happy to take every so often, even though each time I do I want to change the sad ending
