This CD is a set of American music — old folk songs, tarnished with time; early blues and ragtime jazz, a morality tale, a comic story of cowardice in war, and a Pennsylvania Dutch hymn.
“Undone in Sorrow” comes from the work of American banjoist, folksinger, and songwriter Ola Belle Reed. “That’ll Never Happen No More” comes from the work of Arthur “Blind” Blake. “Grinnin’ in Your Face” is by Son House. “The Unquiet Grave” is a traditional song.
“Stuff They Call Money” comes from the work of Big Bill Broonzy. “A Rose Touched by the Sun’s Warm Rays” is a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch Hymn. “I Saw a Man at the Close of Day” is a temperance song from tradition. “I Wish I Wish My Baby Was Born” is also traditional.
“Fightin’ the War with Spain” is a song I learned from the early 20th century recordings of Wilmer Watt and His Lonely Eagles. “900 Miles” is traditional. “Cossacks’ Reel” is an original instrumental.
Dean Rathje: voices, guitars, dobro, banjo, mandolin, piano, bass.
