Perhaps a more fair description should be Petals and rosebuds, since yes, there is a much greater percentage of petals than buds, however the photo shows this and is very accurate, at least for my bag. I've dried my own petals/ buds in the past from an unknown, but very spicy highly scented old fashioned rose bush I have and I can say the smell of these are totally comparable to my own high quality. No the smell is not heavy, in your face smell of a fresh rose, but anyone expecting that is not making a fair assessment of this product. I wad frankly amazed they have as much smell as they do!
I did not look through every speck of the bag, but did not notice any foreign things in the petals (bugs, feathers, etc) but lets be honest, even canned soup or such has an allowance in parts per million of certain things we may find inedible (mouse poo, animal hair etc.) My bag is a zipper seal type, and had a tag that says culinary / food grade. My personal intention is not for food things, but nice to know they are.
As for bugs, I'd treat this like I would any other dry food product, like rice for example. I put it in the freezer for 24 or more hours. Allow it to come to room temperature (you don't want condensation build up locked in your container) then put in a container that is totally air tight. This will kill any bug eggs and keep them from hatching. No zip baggies, or even food saver type, bugs can eat into them. Glass, metal or plastic, sturdy screw top etc.
Frankly, I feel a bit better about the petals knowing that bugs would *like* to eat them. Critters are way more intuitive about food than humans LOL
The pictures were taken on a gray surface outside in bright, but not so darn direct sunlight. I don't know if you can see the dusties at the bottom of the bag in pic one? Two is a sample of the "buds" one and two in the second pic, were never actual buds, and 1 was the most mature when picked, which is why it lost its petals. There were not too many of these in the bag, but certainly some and my guess is that the petals from these guys are in my bag.
I am very happy with them and would recommend them and I certainly will buy them again from this seller. They are an excellent product at a very fair price.
Once I ran out, I've looked far and wide for the same product, without having to pay $10/per ounce for it, so I thought I would try this one. I could see from the pictures that it was mostly petals and that its color is too dark but I thought maybe it would work.
Honestly, it doesn't. It is fragrant but not that much. I have to add 2 or 3 times that amount I would with my old roses to get about 1/2 the flavor. When you open the package, it's fragrant. For some reason, that fragrance doesn't translate to the tea. Also, the buds are very far and few in between.
The only thing it has going for it is the price, but if you have to add 3 times the amount, I'm not sure the price is that great either.
In short, I won't be re-ordering these. The search continues. If anyone has any leads, on fragrant rose buds that aren't super expensive, please let me know.
