"Rosegarden Companion" is a concise though, adequately-detailed and handy guide to any person wishing to learn and even get to grips with the excellent open-source music sequencer software package "Rosegarden". Whether one is experienced in using Linux or not, this book has some informative explanations of the ever-growing features of Rosegarden that both an experienced composer and a weekend hobbyist could benefit from. In addition, there is also a detailed explanation of the Linux audio server "JACK" (Jack audio connection kit) and how to optimize its use together with useful references to other Linux audio software like fluidsynth, qsynth, hydrogen, ZynAddSubFX, JACK Timemachine, audacity, alsamodular, aeolus, lilypond and rezound (to mention a few). These references also provide an excellent introduction to the world of Linux audio while simultaneously showing how any musician could optimize his/her digital workflow by integrating these precious resources with Rosegarden. In this way, details of setting up one's virtual studio, digital recording, editing musical compositions at the event level, creating aesthetically-pleasing and legible scores, digital mastering and audio editing are discussed. One little quibble about this book is that some of the block diagrams are not entirely legible since they are presented in lighter shades of gray. Even though this book is slightly outdated with respect to the latest version of Rosegarden available (1.4.0 as of this writing), considering the wealth of information that this book provides, these minor criticisms can be easily overlooked. I strongly recommend obtaining a copy.

The Rosegarden Companion - brief review

I reviewed this book for the Linux Journal and gave it a positive rating. Rosegarden is a deep program with many features, and this book does a fine job of introducing it. The Companion is especially good for beginners who need a lot of hand-holding through the early stages of setup and configuration; advanced users may find less to absorb their attention. The writing style is familiar and non-technical, accessible to any reader regardless of expertise. Rosegarden is logically organized into a number of music editors, and the book presents the program in the same way, i.e., by considering each editor and its capabilities. The chapter on the Notation Editor is especially valuable, very helpful even to an experienced user. Alas, some of the images are not reproduced very well, and I would have given the book 5 stars if the images had been better printed. Overall, this book is a fine addition to the Linux media bookshelf (though really it should stay open by your machine), and I recommend it to anyone interested in the growing field of Linux multimedia software.

THE Linux sequencer/notation software bible

If you use Linux for music, and I do, Rosegarden is the most popular, most mature, most stable, feature rich music notation/sequencer software available. And this book was written by the people who wrote the software. The book is smaller, thinner than I thought, but offers a comprehensive guide to using Rosegarden.

This is undoubtably the best documentation for Rosegarden software available.

If you're reading this, you probably already know if you need this book. I can add that it is very nicely written (though badly printed and carelessly edited) in a style that is harder than it looks. McIntyre remembers where the pitfalls are and leads the beginner around them without condescension.
