I'm an enthusiastic linguaphile with a background in linguistics and language learning. I learned Spanish through classrooms and textbooks, and although I am fluent, I occasionally get this frustrated feeling like I'm missing a piece, like having skipped a page in a novel but not knowing which page. I learned American Sign Language in a totally natural environment, by contrast, and I feel as at home in ASL as I do in English (my first language). This program feels a lot more like my ASL learning experience than my Spanish experience.

I got it to learn as much Greek as possible in about six months, before I go to Greece. I just cracked it open a few days ago, and already I am speaking in full sentences. Granted, they are guided sentences, but I have already pieced together quite a few novel sentences using the vocabulary and grammar I have already picked up. I'm impressed, and I know enough about language learning that being impressed by a piece of software is a pretty big statement for me.

Initially I thought I would just learn the absolute basics, enough to survive Greece by myself without an interpreter. But I'm only on level 1, unit 1, lesson 3, and I already see that I am going to learn (and retain) a lot more than survival Greek. I haven't peeked ahead at level two yet, but, judging by how much is packed into the first three lessons, I would guess that each level is superior to an entire semester of a college class, at roughly a third of the price.

My only wish so far is that it came with a very basic book of grammar and spelling rules. I do think the program is well-designed, providing careful contrast in each phrase/sentence so that you can figure out the rules as you go, which is the most natural way of doing it.

I purchased this for my girlfriend who already owned Greek 1 and 2 from the original version 1 product. She feels this is far superior to the original (level 1 is about equivalent to both level 1 and 2 on the old version). It installed easily and runs smoothly. She really likes the online training component as well. The only cons to it is the expense and the draconian copy protection. We have not had to move it yet, but I hear it can be a pain to install it on a new machine (requiring a phone call).

This program is VERY challenging but if you are willing to put in consistent effort, it is very rewarding. No English instructions so there is a little muddling through the exercises at first but I'm very happy with my progress. I have taken some group Greek lessons and gone through the Pimsler audio tapes and I think this is a much better program.

Don't believe the hype on radio and TV. The reason they can advertise like that is from the monies they make from idiots like me. It may work for some people but I got almost the same understanding of the language, in this case Greek, as a Mynah bird. The Pimsleur course is much better and easier to follow. They took me from basic greetings and situations to just about everything I needed during my extended vacation in Greece.
On top of all of this Rosetta Stone expected me to pay more money to continue my studies past 90 days. Not what I call a company interested in teaching anything other than how to make money from the unsuspecting. It has slick packaging and photographs but little in the way of helping me to learn and retain. My recommendation is to skip it.

This is the best Rosetta stone version yet! Everything is easy to navigate. It's actually making learning Greek fun. The program was obviously designed for beginners because it assumes you know nothing, which was perfect for us!

If you are learning Greek on your own, using multiple sources, this is a very fun addition after you have some Greek under your belt. Breaks up the monotony of trying to learn a language, because it's like a game. If I had had no previous Greek, it would have been very frustrating. But as an addition, after covering the basics, it's fun. We use, as our primary source, the Papaloizos books--starting with the First Grade Primer. For an older learner like me--Papaloizos is perfect. He reads the book on the accompanying cd. Some adults might find it too much for kids--but to me its perfect. Slow going, lots of repetition coupled with pictures, perfect. My high school age daughter went through the first grade primer, then right into the High School Modern Greek I, by Papalouizos. I could not use that book. It is typical high school foreign language textbook. Too hard for me! If I ever get out of the first grade primer, I'm going onto the second grade book:)

This is my second purchase of a Rosetta Stone product. Their language recognition is the best I can find and what I need most from the software. I found the "immersion method" to be hard because it is not a true immersion where you go somewhere and daily life takes place in the language you are studying. I think it is just easy to produce software this way, thereby maximizing profit. The software could benefit from flash cards, explanations of what the words are. I often find myself speaking sentences I have no idea what is being said.

The writing exercises are worthless. Not only do you have to know exactly what is being said, you have to remember all of the spelling with no practice. I have to skip them. The software could really use some writing skills development. If you want to learn to write Greek, I would not start here.

Also, they have a function that will slow down the pronunciation of sentences however it is near useless because that is what it is a slowed down version of the exact same recording. It could benefit from someone speaking the sentences slower and emphasizing the pronunciation. The software does not take you through the pronunciation word by word. So if you are having trouble with a particular word, there is not help for you from the software.

And the coupe de grais is this. I bought my software two months ago. It came with an analog headset that did not work with my computer. So I improvised with a microphone and headseat, which work with the software. Today I had my first tutoring session. It worked well until about 10 minutes in when we lost sound. I contacted support and they informed me that the analog headsets don't always work so they made it a requirement a month and a half ago that you have to use a USB headset.
