A word of caution: I first purchased a PCI card( VANTEC 4-Port FireWire 400 PCI Host Card Model UGT-FW050) that was 50% cheaper and that, according to the reviews, is quite good for the job. I did not know that it has a completely different connector and that my new Dell computer has 3 PCI-E slots but none for PCI. Therefore, I had no choice but to send that card back. So please know what you are buying - check if your computer has a proper slot.
I have no idea who may need an internal port in the card, especially taking into the account that it cannot work simultaneously with one of the external ports.
I perform monthly backups of the files on my server to an external 3TB hard drive. Unfortunately the hard drive doesn't have an Ethernet port which would make the process fast and simple. However, it does have a USB 3.0 port. The Aspire H342 on the other hand doesn't have this. Performing the backups using the server's USB 2.0 ports typically took between 24 and 30 or so hours. Having added this USB 3.0 card to the server's empty PCIe slot, my backups are now completing in around 8 or so hours! I couldn't be happier with this purchase!
For those who also own an Acer Aspire H342, as you know, you will need to do a remote desktop connection to the server and install the included drivers as an Administrator. I found the easiest way was to simply insert the disk into you client PC, browse to the CD drive, and copy the RC-505 folder to the server's "Software" share (which is where the server connector software and stuff is also located), then browse to that folder in RDP and simply run the .exe file within. The drivers will install in a minute or two and you will be good to go!
Install the card apply the power. Install drivers.
Tried to copy more than 200 gb different files to a segate usb 3.0 device and the speed with the new card is of 36mb/sec .... It also lags the pc, meaning everytime I copied a file over a usb HDD using the the card my mouse movement is not smooth it stops somes times and then it appears at the supoosed position.
PC specs quad core proc , 6 gb ram, evga mobo nforce. win 7 64 bits, evga gtx video card.
Any ideas/help ....?
Here is an update. May 3rd
After contacting support, which they reply pretty fast they told me to use the drivers from the following link.
Version 220.127.116.11 Pour Windows Xp/Vista/7/8 32/64bits
and Firmware Version 18.104.22.168 pour uPD720200a (Windows 32 & 64bits)
The lag is gone.Transfer rate is slow.
usign the Seagate Backup Plus 3 TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive (STCA3000101)
If there is any other news I will post them, if not I will return the card.
Well after getting in contact again with customer service they sent a new one.
Seems the issue is gone.
Will change review to 3 stars. The card does its work, if you review around not only here you will find tons of complains about they get a faulty card.
Great support they have.
Recommend this card for PCI-Express, particularly if you are looking for a non-legacy, 64-bit driver firewire solution .
Once I plugged in the Rosewill USB 3.0 device and powered it with a MOLEX connector, we were in business. I installed the included drivers and everything just worked. I highly recommend! Just keep in mind you will need a spare MOLEX power connector. It's a shame it didn't come with a splitter + extension, but I got what I paid for!
