Not quite the right fit
June 26, 2013
I read numerous reviews before purchasing this item and I was convinced that this would be just the right story to read to my adopted daughter(adopted from the foster care system). I bought two of them because I have a friend who is in the process of adopting a 3 year old from foster care as well. This story wasn't the right fit for our situation.
There were a couple little comments in the book that didn't fit but I still would have kept the book, but my biggest issue with this book for us was when it said "Mom and Dad understand my feelings but have explained that they adopted me after my birth parents had decided they could not look after a baby." and "They think they were brave to let me have a new family even though it probably made them sad". Our situation(and the situation that my friend who is currently adopting) did not have "brave" parents and they didn't make a calm, thoughtful decision to give up their child. This mom was abusive and addicted to drugs and didn't even know who the father was. I will continue to be respectful when speaking about my child's birth parents, but with(age appropriate) honesty. I would never describe them as brave. This story probably wouldn't work well for most foster care families. I am sending both books back.
