The career of Dr. Roskam covered multiple transitional technologies and ranged from the wood and fabric to the Avanti on the cover. His background of working within both the European and American aerospace industries makes this volume important in the sense that he provides a great history of the post WWII in general while relating his stories about the companies, personalities and airframes he was involved with over the years. Although some of the "lessons" may seem obvious (And part of day to day procedures.) to anyone involved in aviation for any period of time, reading a first hand account from someone who was there only reinforces them.
In summary: A nice primer for a engineering or STEM student, a entertaining refresher for any aerospace veteran.
I own the book and have taken Roskams courses at KU. Often in a lecture, Dr. Roskam would set the dry erase marker down and recant a personal experience or two that applied to the lesson. The stories contained in this book are the type of knowledge that is learned through real world experience, often in the company of reknowned aircraft designers or high profile aerospace giants.
The majority of the "War" stories contain some engineering humor or lessons learned by Jan Roskam in his celebrated Aerospace career. Many readers might find the book a little dry, but if you are an engineer or happen to have heard of Jan Roskam this will be amusing reading, especially compared to the volumes of Roskam Textbooks.
These "War Stories" are a good collection to preserve the legacy of Jan Roskam, an outstanding educator and one of the great minds of the aerospace industry in the late 20th century.
