Top customer reviews
I am initially posting my preliminary review and first impression which will be followed later by more extensive thoughts and observations.
I've seen plenty of these new higher-end canister vacuums in the stores (Dyson, Miele, etc.) but had yet to have one in my home. I've always been fan of shop vacs (for their raw power) when it comes to heavy duty cleaning needs and cordless uprights/handhelds for convenience and every day use. I wondered if this Shark could come anywhere close to the suction power of small sized shop vac or have anywhere near the convenience of an upright.
Upon it's arrival I was immediately intrigued by the marketing tout right on the box-- the proclamation that Shark vacuums have "More 5 star online reviews than any other brand". That really piqued my interest and I couldn't wait to find out if this machine was going to live up to the high expectations that the Shark company was setting up for it.
If looks could kill, taking this machine out of the box could be a fatal affair. Is this really vacuum cleaner? It looks too good. With it's jewel-tone metallic paint like finish and giant spoked looking wheels this thing evokes a futuristic souped-up hot rod you might see in a Star Wars film. After looking it over and enjoying it's sharp looks, I began some knuckle tests and feeling & poking around, looking for weaknesses. It was initially impressive, even an engineering marvel in it's overall design. The hose, which sometimes is the weakest link in a vacuum, is nice and sturdy. Although there is obviously a lot of plastic used, it felt pretty solid and not cheaply made.
One of the first functional things that I noticed were the two large rectangular buttons on the top of the canister, one for power and the other to withdraw the power cord. I really appreciated the size and placement of these. I then tried the removal and replacement of the dirt compartment a few times and found that to be a smooth and simple procedure. Of course then I just had to try the "Lift-Away" feature. You simply step on a lever at the back of the canister and lift the main part up by it's handle and away it goes. It's very simple and clever. As soon as I did that I spied the crevice and brush attachments which are stowed in the base (that bottom part with the wheels). My initial impression of this Lift-Away feature was that while it is nice, you really almost feel like you are not really leaving much behind. Most of the weight of the unit is in the motor and and such. It becomes a little more portable as you leave behind the wheel assembly and small attachments, but not in a dramatic way.
I moved on to the "click" assembly/dis-assembly between the parts, those being the hose, wand and three cleaning heads. This is where I encountered one issue. All the "click" connection between all of the parts worked smoothly, except for the connection between the wand and the motorized head. I expected it to require a bit of extra force to lock in since there is also a power connection involved, but I sensed that something was wrong. At first I could not even get it to lock in. I inserted it with a push just like the other connections, the motor was powered up and it appeared to be in place but it slipped right back out when trying to use it. After some effort I found that it took a LOT of force to make the connection so that it would lock in place. I thought that this was perhaps a quality control issue, since I could not imagine it being designed to require THAT much force (I had to use some body weight or even pick it up and sort of hammer it in).
I decided to call Shark to inquire. I tried to convey to the rep that it seemed to require much more force to attache the motorized head than the other connections. Initially she told me several times that this was normal and that it was due to the power connection. I tried to better emphasize the amount of force that it was requiring, but she still seemed reluctant to think that it was a QC or manufacturing issue. I thought back to the quip on the box ("most five star reviews') and thought something was wrong here, so I pressed further and sensing my growing irritation she finally relented (albeit with a reluctant and patronizing tone) and said that if I REALLY wanted it, they would send out a replacement wand and motorized head. I asked for the replacement head alone, since the wand worked just fine with the other pieces. I am currently awaiting receipt of that replacement head and will update on this issue and perhaps put up a short video.
In the meantime, I am putting the vacuum through it paces around the house. I have to say that so far I am impressed with the suction. It is no wimp. More to come as I become more familiar with this interesting machine.
Update: I have since received the replacement motorized head and have discovered that the initial head that came with my vacuum did indeed have a defect. The replacement clicks in quite easily and I am very happy with it's operation. I had even received an automated message from Shark letting me know that the replacement part had shipped and it's tracking number. The initial unfortunate customer service phone call experience is all but forgotten from my mind.
As I use the vacuum more I am discovering that there are a lot of small details that I've really come to appreciate. One that stands out is the notch the back of the canister for hooking the wand onto so that it stands upright. It is so simple but it works and is super convenient.
If you have any questions about this vacuum before I can fill this review up with every detail, please ask and I will do my best to answer.

Pros: It is light enough to tote on the stairs (I'm 68) and the smaller roller attachment makes quick work of the carpet on the stairs. The head without the roller bar is brilliant on hardwood--- the floors under the beds are the cleanest they have been since we moved in. The non-roller head also has a setting for carpets, and it is fine for throw rugs, especially with the suction control opened a bit so the whole rug does not get sucked in. The roller head is better than my uprights for carpet ( I used it after using the upright it left me embarrassed at how much dirt was still in the carpet). At first I thought it would be annoying to have to lift off the body to get at the dusting and crevice tools, but it is no big deal at all, and actually preferable to my other canister's arrangement of tools carried on top of the body, where they sometimes fall off. The motor, although more powerful than my other vacuums, is definitely quieter. Storing a canister take up more room than storing an upright, but this fits into the closet adequately (see photo), needing 3 feet of width because of the hose and roller head, but only 11 inches of depth. Alternatively, set the floor nozzle upright (it locks) and set it in front of the body (photo). This requires 30 inches of width and about 14 inches of depth in the closet. My other canister can be set vertically, so it uses less closet space, but it doesn't perform on anywhere near the same level. So I consider it a fair trade-off. Emptying the dustbin, and rinsing the filters (every 3 months), is easy.
Cons: Ideally I would have a dusting tool that is horsehair and swivels freely. The one included here is a bit too stiff, and while it can be set at various angles to make tasks like dusting baseboards easier, it does not swivel easily. I'll look for the ideal tool in the aftermarket. But this isn't enough of a flaw to lose a star. Also, the roller head, when engaged, pulls the head along a low carpet too fast to do a good job, so I had to exert a bit of a pull on it to slow it down enough to really clean the carpet. But this became second nature quickly.
And the carpet got sooo clean!!
My only 2 negatives so far is that it's a bit noisy (but I can deal with that to have a clean floor!) and the suction/rotator brush is so powerful it ripped up the loose strands in my carpet, which also then wrapped around the brush. But there's a handy cutting groove on the brush to make cutting it away easy. And my floor has never been cleaner!
