I have bought at least 4 cutters for home use, NONE of which have lasted very long, despite being between $50 to $100. I decided, enough was enough. I wanted a cutter like the one I used to use at work. I know paying $200 for a cutter seems insane, but it is WELL worth it. Sheffield steel blade, clear marking, paper stop/guide, and really accurate cutting. You can literally shave off fine pieces of your paper or card. It is sturdy, solid, and does not slide at all.
One word of warning: When using this cutter, keep your hand firmly on the black slide part of the cutter more to the left if you are sliding it right, and more to the right side if you are sliding it left. This is so you do not pinch your hand when the "carriage" gets to the stop. Learnt that many years ago, the HARD way.
Do not hesitate buying this item or any of the cutters by Rotatrim, you will not regret it.
When I received this trimmer, I was shocked. It is not just another trimmer, it is a precision made machine! The base is thick and very solid; the rotary cutter housing and slide supports are metal, not plastic. If fact, the only plastic on the unit is the clear finger guard along the cutting edge. The sliding action is silky smooth and the cuts are clean and perfect.
Apparently, many graphic design firms and photographers use these trimmers all day, every day. I have been told that under such heavy use, the cutter wheel generally lasts about 5 years before needing replacement. Under less stringent use, the cutter wheel has been known to last 15 to 20 plus years.
The fact that many of these trimmers have been in service for over 20 years is a testament to their quality parts, construction, and design.
This brand is more expensive than some others, but if you need a trimmer that is solid, reliable, and trouble free for the long haul, Rotatrim is the brand you want. As the saying goes, quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten!
Notice that it's heavy. Quite heavy. Not portable. Also, there are warnings all over not to pick it up by the bars. I have always avoided touching the bar, but be aware of this. Apparently if the bars are mishandled, it can harm this device. Of course, replacement parts are available, which is nice.
I like that its design is quite safe. I was always very careful with my most recent guillotine style cutter while using it, but I picked it up one time (it was closed) and it cut my finger very severely. This Rotatrim cutter seems to be much safer. You'd have to really try in order to cut yourself.
This type of trimmer (rotary) works better at cutting multiple sheets than the guillotine kind because it has less tendency to pull the paper in and give uneven cuts. However, I do think there are some guillotine cutters that could cut heavier duty stuff. It's a trade off.
There are two things that are just ok about this trimmer: One is the backstop. Not very special or useful. It's small, hard to get exactly square, and allows paper to slide underneath it. I'll probably take it off. For a really nice trimmer they should have one that goes the whole length of the trimmer and screws down on both sides so you can get it really straight. The other issue is the plastic thing that holds the paper down as it cuts. It does a good job of holding the paper in place, but it also makes it a little hard to put paper in just where you want it. You have to use a little bit of force and if you are cutting multiple pages they can become misaligned as you do this. Both of these items can be easily removed apparently, but why not design and implement better features? The design of the cutter, bar, and basic surface is excellent. They could have put a little more thought into the backstop and holder.
This is Rotatrim's higher end line of cutters. The alternatives I was looking at were the Dahl 440 line, which seemed similar in a lot of ways (I ultimately paid extra for this because it looked less bulky and the parts seemed easier to get), and the Saunders rotary cutter. The Saunders model seems to be identical, and I mean identical, to this product but much cheaper. I kind of wish I had the courage to have bought the Saunders because now that I have the Rotatrim I realize it's not made of unicorn horn and elf magic or anything. I expect that the Saunders is very much the same product in all respects. I suspect people avoid it because of snobbery (made in the UK instead of China) or just brand familiarity. For me it was the latter. I guess I paid for that familiarity in the price of this cutter.
Still, price notwithstanding, this is a fine cutter that does a good job and will last a long time. I'm happy to own it.
