Fit note: It is a bit small compared to Milspec measurements, as the military considers the sizing AFTER a washing. I ordered the 7.75" version, since that is the size of Milspec hat I wear, and it feels like the same fit of my military hats AFTER washing. So, be careful to only wash this in cold water if your order your true hat size, or order one size up from your normal size if you want to insure a still comfortable fit after warm water washing.
One of the warmest hats I've ever had. Seriously.
If I had to give it just one "nay," I'd just say that I wish the back went a little bit lower to cover my neck more, but still a great hat.
5 stars for sure.
But when I tried to put it on my head, it
…well I was able to jam it on – but it felt like a vice around my temples.
This was a 7-3/4 sized hat (adult XL normally) and, after trying it on all family members,
it sat nicely only on my tween-aged girl.
Investigating the matter more carefully, it seems that the crown (the bowl shaped part that sits on the head) is in fact the right size. However, the band that connects the crown to the ear flaps and neck protection pulls the edges of the crown together to something like a size small.
If one has a bulbous alien-like head, one can pull it on so that the band comes below the bulbous part – after which the hat would presumably sit comfortably.
(now that I look at the photo again, I can see that bulbousness at the top which I had not registered before buying)
By way of “gilding the lily” – a brief criticism of the aesthetics – the front decorative fold-over panel is just proportionally too small for the crown. So, where I even to squeeze my head into this thing, it just doesn’t look right …like it was tacked on as an afterthought.
Or – perhaps only the crowns come sized – but the entire rest of the assembly, including earflaps and the front decorative panel, are the same ones as would go to a small.
Definitely NOT worth it at any price.
