Personally, i had Yet to recieve anything good quality from Rothco. Today, when i got the knife, They Have finally changed my mind that they can indeed make a decent knife. The Saw on the back of the blade is yet to be tested, It is pouring down cold rain and everything is wet. However i will Test it first chance i get. Stainless steel and heavy as can be, The Handle really suprised me considering Rothco usually makes every handle out of Hard plastic. This handle is Top Grade Metal, And extremely durable. The blade is sharp and made of stainless Steel, which tells me it probably wont rust in my life time. It was so nice to see Rothco produce something durable. In a moment of "too good to be true." i opened the handle lid and removed the contents trying to examine how the blade was secured to the handle, to my suprise, It was Held Firmly, Half tang into a metal Squarish hole that is about an inch and a half deep. The blade is not secured by a little rod with a nut like most survival knives, which means this knife may just endure The sharpening of a stick and other Under pressure tasks. I truly was pleased. Now lets move onto the sheath, which is Super sturdy plastic and the inside is metal. Its about 11 inches long and has two compartments on the inside separated by a piece of steel. One side you slide the Knife in, the other houses the Harpoon, Wire saw, and whistle like thing. Extremely sturdy and the leg straps and Snaps hold the knife in place and the sheath to your leg. I am wearing it right now, sitting down and it is firmyly secured to my leg.Read more ›
First off, it's an awesome idea, having a hand saw, fishing necessities, minor medical gear all wrapped into a sharp (que drums) package. But, unfortunately, I don't like this particular knife set. It will work for my wife (who hates knives anyways), but I think the quality leaves a bit to be desired.
I sharpened it immediately when I opened it, as it comes quite dull. Usually it takes me about an hour to decently sharpen a blade, but this one only took ten minutes. The steel is very soft and probably won't hold an edge for long.
Secondly, it's very shoddy equipment. I mean, honestly, for around $20, what could I expect? But even nowadays the cheap stuff can be very high quality. Maybe I just got my hopes up too high...
Anywho, all in all, it's okay, not great. Worth $20? Absolutely. But the downside, it's a $20 knife.
But I didn't buy it for survival. I bought it because it looked like a very cool toy. And it is. I am very pleased with it.
The blade is adequate for the kind of cutting you'll do on a weekend camping trip - though don't count on using the saw on the back edge to actually saw through anything. It was fairly sharp when I got it and got a lot sharper without too much work. The size, shape and weight of the blade make for good brush clearing, whittling, rudimentary camp cooking, etc. (On serious camping trips I always pack my Forschner Fibrox 8 in an ultra-secure sheath as part of my cooking gear.)
What makes this totally cool are the accessories, some of which ride in the hollow handle, some of which ride in a removable metal sleeve that nests inside the sheath -- and which doubles as a signaling mirror. They include a wire saw with insertable handles that actually WILL cut a decent size piece of firewood, for example, and a "harpoon" and line meant for, I dunno, lashing to a stick and stabbing wild pigs a la Rambo, I guess.
More practical items include band-aids, needle and thread, safety pins, fishing hooks and enough line to make a reasonable effort to land a fish, and a genuine-article scalpel blade that's sterilized and sealed in a foil pouch. There's also a very serviceable wire cutter that you work by inserting the hole in the knife blade through a metal peg on the sheath and rotating the knife.
The compass in the screw-top of the handle works, but it's not liquid filled, so it's very jiggly.Read more ›
