I have worn these boots for a while now. I have been hiking, camping, and just wearing them for fun. These boots are actually a size too big. So order them accordingly. These boots are tough, and comfortable. I would have paid more for them. Excellent boots, and well worth the money.
EDIT UPDATE at 6 months: The sole is separating from the boot: Downgraded from 4 to 2 stars. They are comfortable (worn with an insole). The zipper is very helpful if you have to take your boots off when you come into the house. The zipper has not failed. I want to like this boot...
These are very similar boots. Both of them met the criteria I wanted: A lightweight 8" boot, more flexible than the usual "work boot", with an aggressive outdoor sole, good lateral foot and ankle support, and enough padding, Cardura and leather in the uppers to at least slow down a rattlesnake fang.
Significantly less expensive
The zipper makes it faster to put on.
Weight 1lb 5.8oz ea.
I like the rougher suede look of the Rothco (but I didn't get these boots to wear to the dance, even if I had I'm not sure I would wear a zippered boot to the dance).
This boot seems to be made for a large volume foot/ankle, much larger than mine. Even when I cinch it up tight and wear a thick sock I need to pull the upper parts together until they are almost touching. It seems like the designed the boot and then added the "extra" zipper. I cut about a foot off of each lace.
the Magnum Elite Spider 8.0:
Comfort - it broke in much faster and has been more comfortable in the longer run.
Half sizes available.
Weight: 1lb 3.7oz ea.
Has a Vibram sole; a brand name I have respected for over 40 years. The Rothco sole looks very similar...
Rothco runs large. I am comparing a 9 (med) Rothco to a 10 (med) Magnum: Even so, the Magnum is ever so slightly lighter; probably the weight of the zipper.
I prefer more arch support than either of these boots provide. I use a Superfeet insole with both of them.
Both of them initially appear to be well made although from other commenters I expect the Magnum (both sole and uppers) will last longer. Someone reading this a year from now remind me to come back and let y'all know how they held up.
At this point I would say the Magnum is worth the extra $ for a more comfortable boot (but your foot looks different than mine).
