    **EDITED BELOW WITH IMPORTANT INFO!**

There has clearly been a lot of discussion about this bag being of poor quality, and after receiving mine and viewing several others in stores, I can objectively tell you that there are some fakes floating around the market. I feel terrible for all the people who have had bad experiences with their "Rothco" bag, as idiots who have flooded the market with Chinese junk are making a terrible name for a great brand. Below is a review of the official M-51 Engineers Bag.

    DESIGN/QUALITY
Ok take a look at the picture on this page - this looks like a slim vertical messenger bag right? Ok now imagine that you are going to receive a bigger bag than the one in the picture. Got it? It's going to be even bigger than that! As another reviewer rightly mentioned, the dimensions given are an under-estimation of the INTERIOR dimensions. Pulling this bag out of the box, it truly is bigger than you would think. It doesn't help that it is made of heavy canvas, but then again, it depends on your expectations. The TRUE Rothco bag is very well made. The stitching is all very straight and clearly not going to break any time soon. The strap is heavy, and after several weeks of heavy use I can tell you that not one part of the bag looks like it is going to give out any time soon. Now on the design. The bag has a total of 3 Large pockets (Main laptop area, and two in the flap). It has 4 velcro pockets for cellphones/chargers etc, and 20 open pockets of various sizes for pens/cables etc. This is more than enough for any power user.

    AND THE FAKES?
The imitations (cheap fakes) that I caught at a local store have none of these characteristics, the stitching is terrible and wonky in some places, and the zippers/clasps/strap all feel flimsy and cheap.

I bought this bag initially to help me carry all my engenieering and school stuff during summer when I'm doing self study and don't need the whole backpack. Its so convienant I've ended up packing a lot more into it than I had originally intended on doing. To give you an idea of how well it can expand to fit almost everything you could ever need, I've got:
    1 Laptop
    2 math books
    3 novels
    2 pencils
    2 pens
    2 graphing note books
1 pack of smokes and a lighter
    2 pencil sharpeners
    1 calculator

That setup has it filled pretty much to its maxium capacity lol. The material seems to be great, I waited over a month to write this review to see if any tears or breaks would show up, and so far, none have.

For those guys who want one, but are afraid of the "murse" (man purse) status, rest assured the plain black with nothing shiny or 'loud' muffle any comments. All I really have to say about that argument is Convenience > Insecurites :)

That being said, all in all, I'm hard press to find a flaws. Now if only it could magically make everything in it lighter . . .

For those of you in a hurry:

The M-51 is great in that it can hold everything but the kitchen sink. Lots of compartments, good looks, and stands out. However it suffers from poor design for the shoulder strap and handle; if you load the bag up with more than a couple pounds of stuff, the strap detaching is a matter of when, not if.

For me, this bag reminds me of a high school relationship:

    Phase 1: Infatuation
When I got the bag, I absolutely loved it. The distressed olive drab khaki was gorgeous, the strap was comfortable on my shoulder, and it could hold EVERYTHING. It could comfortably fit my tablet, my laptop, a book or two, large headphones, pens, pencils, calculator, gloves, and a partridge in a pear tree. It looked different than the plethora of messenger bags marauding down the streets of Boston, and I thought that the military surplus feel of it implied quality. I forgot military supplies are built by the lowest bidder.

    Phase 2: Problems We Ignore
The stitching at the top of the bag tore so the shoulder strap fell off one side. "Oh, no big deal, I can just reattach it to the clip where the handle is." So I did. I figured that I just overfilled it too many times and oh well. However it did make me wonder why the shoulder strap would be affixed to the top of the bag instead of the sides. This concentrates the weight on a small flap instead of distributing it, making the entire weight of whatever you carry pull at a single string. Quite the design flaw, but nobody is perfect right?

Phase 3: Seriously... Something is Wrong!
But the memory of the bag falling from my grasp, hitting the floor, the top flipping open... it haunted me. The feeling of betrayal began to eat at me. Wasn't I good enough for the bag?

Okay I admit it, i have a bag addiction. Right now in my field of vision I can see at least four other bags I have used and wound up putting aside for one reason or another. I am very particular about the bags I use, but I am also thrifty, and just can't bring myself to spend $100 on a bag I may add to the discard pile. So let me share with you why I choose this bag, and my impressions of it thus far.

I was attracted to the vertical messenger bag design, along with the understated look of the bag (it's not a purse, or a European man bag - it's just a bag) I was looking for several features that I believe this bag has incorporated into it's design:
    1. Vertical Messenger bag
    2. Outside pocket on the flap - I need a place to drop stuff in on the fly
    3. Water bottle holder - the pocket on the right side will hold a normal bottle of water
    4. Easy access - the single toggle button in the front is so easy - much faster than the clips on my previous bag
    5. Pen/Pencil holder - yeah I know I am old school that way, but this has 6 pen/pencil holders (they could be just a tad bigger, some of my thicker pens wont fit.
    6. Grab handle on top - check!
    7. Pockets to hold all my small stuff - coins, jump drive's, etc. This has two interior pockets that are great for the little things - both are hook and loop (Velcro)closure - i would like one zipper pocket.
    8. It had to look right - not too big, not too small and I didn't want to look like an executive going into a power meeting or a metro-male carrying his man products.
    9. It needs to hold its shape even empty - I don't like a big floppy bag, this has enough structure to it to keep it rigid without being hard.
