Quick way to make cutouts in dry wall and other materials
>6 foot cord
Weighs about 2.5 pounds
Housing is virtually 100% plastic
Packaged with only two bits
Not for fine cutting/edge work
The RotoZip SS355 is an excellent 5.5 Amp, spiral saw system. This is the lowest of the line for RotoZip, but at 30,000 rpm, this thing really packs a punch.
There is little that is packaged with the SS355--just two bits: a Multipurpose Guidepoint bit and a Sabercut bit. There are also replacement collets that can be used for different sized bits. The device also comes with a small wrench for tightening. The device itself weighs in around 2.5 lbs and is corded. The cord is about 6 feet long, which is fine for a power tool. The RotoZip appears to be made well enough, but there is little metal visible on the surface. The housing is made of high impact plastic as is the cutting guide. This means that the tool is lighter and easier to handle but may mean that it won't hold up as well in the long run.
The both bits are apparently good for cutting through sheetrock, wood, fiberglass, plastic, vinyl/aluminum siding, although they are slightly different. The Sabercut bit's cutting spiral goes all the way to the tip whereas the Multipurpose bit's cutting spiral stopped just short of the end. Both included bits were 5/32" in diameter.
The Sabercut bit seemed to drill more easily penetrate into plywood. On sheetrock I didn't notice a difference.
Once the bit is in place and tightened, you can set the depth guide on the front of the RotoZip to the desired depth and can start cutting.Read more ›
It's a combination drill and saw, so you can pierce the drywall by angling the bit into the surface, then move the tool along to cut any shape. An adjustable depth gauge ensures you do not cut too deeply into the wall. In order to cut a straight line, say for opening up a wall for plumbing work, you can tack down a furring strip and use it as a guide to slide the depth gauge along as you cut.
Unfortunately it's a big tool, it's rather heavy, it's made of plastic but it seems to be a high enough grade plastic that it should last. Because of its limited capability and large size, I don't think this would be a good tool to just generally have available in your tool chest unless you do a lot of drywall and indoor framing work.

Tool works fine for light duty use,for extended or heavy use the cheap on/off switch burns out and you`re left with a dead tool and an unfinished project.Published 1 month ago by Peter Veillette
This tool works great on drywall and is a huge timesaver. Takes a few try's to get the hang of it at first. Read morePublished 2 months ago by Amazon Customer
It does what it's supposed to do, but it's a little jerky and grabs the wood. I'm not sure a jig saw wouldn't cut out for receptacles better...Published 2 months ago by MrLucky
