Editorial Reviews

U.S. pressing of this 2009 debut album from Elly Jackson (AKA La Roux), who has everyone from Franz Ferdinand to Daft Punk hailing her as a talent to watch. This self-titled album is a kaleidoscope of emotions, touching on everything from heartbreak to disappointment to invincibility: all in true spine tingling La Roux measures that create an instant resonance. Ranging from the high crystal-clean falsettos of 'Fascination' to the brooding lulls of ballad 'Cover My Eyes' (that features London Community Gospel Choir), the breadth of the album and La Roux's diversity is clear. For Elly and co-producer/ writer Ben Langmaid, La Roux has never been about producing disposable dancefloor fodder. Since meeting four years ago the talented duo's goal was clear - they wanted to bring classic songwriting back into the clubs and charts, and with this album they've accomplished that and far more.

By Antoine D. Reid VINE VOICE on September 29, 2009

If you want something very fun, electronic, pop with a heavy 1980s vibe, La Roux is for you. What I enjoy most about La Roux and her debut album is that it is unlike anything on the radio today. She is not trying to follow any popular music trends; she clearly knows what genre of music fits her best and this album feels very retro while feeling very futuristic at the same time.

The Good: I loved the instrumentals/beats. When I first listened to the album, I thought this was some forgotten 1980s album. The vibe of the album sounds retro but doesn't seem dated at all. It's an odd blend of what made 80s music so fun while somehow keeping its hand and eyes set on the future (perhaps with the use of the computer to alter the voice, giving the album an at times robotic/electronic vibe). The music is carefree and the lyrics are also interesting; nothing entirely deep but at the same time, not frivolous and without a message. I also felt La Roux's vocals stood out on the album. While some of the vocals are processed and run through autotune and computer tweaks, La Roux does sing in a very raw, organic manner on other tracks and is able to really communicate emotion and depth while many artist don't seem to give any thought to what they are singing or how their voice can change the entire tone of the album.

The Bad: With all the synth and electronic treatment is what gives the album its flair and attitude, it also gets somewhat repetitive after a few tracks. This is the style carried out not on one or two tracks but on every track. In a way, it distracts and makes the tracks blend into one and makes some tracks fade or retreat into one another rather than standing out as they should.

I cannot stop listening to this album. I am crazy about La Roux! A friend told me to check out the track "Bulletproof" and I have been hooked since then. There are only a couple of tracks that I don't really listen to and that is very rare for me. Very heavy on the 80s instrumentals and Elly Jackson's voice is incredible. Probably my favorite song is "Going in for the Kill". I'm also very fond of "Colorless Color, "I'm not Your Toy", "Reflections are Protection" and of course "Bulletproof". I haven't found an album that I've liked this much in years. These are songs that I don't mind getting stuck in my head.

La Roux is simply amazing! The songs are soo catchy with the great lyrics and tunes. I simple can't get enough, there is not one song on the CD that I will skip when listening which is very rare these days. Very similar to an underground Lady Gaga, no she is much better than Gaga. I expect to hear much more from and about La Roux in the near future she is an extremely talented artist with such a beautiful voice. A must have CD!!

The electronic synth duo of Elly Jackson and Ben Langmaid returns to the music scene with La Roux: Gold Edition. This collection of B-sides, live performances, and remixes is a standby for their new album, currently in production. Here's my track-by-track overview of the hold-over release:

In for the Kill (Remix feat. Kanye West) - An awesome collaboration between La Roux and Mr. West that takes hip-hop to a whole new level. Nice beats and addition of effects create this vintage sounding piece.

Finally My Saviour - A B-side consisting of electronic synth goodness. If you are familiar with the group, it sounds like a sonic fusion of In for the Kill and Growing Pains. A seamless addition to their debut album.

Under My Thumb - Rolling Stones cover. Elly places an electronic vibe over her voice as she sings through the track effortlessly and beautifully. This was originally found on the Sidetracked UK-exclusive compilation, but as a DJ edit that was used to fade the tracks together as one mix. Good to have this track in it's original format!

I'm Not Your Toy (Jack Beats Remix) - A repetitive remix of I'm not Your Toy. The electronic beats get tiresome after awhile, but this release needed a good remix and Jack Beats was the best offering out of the three on the UK exclusive 3-track I'm Not Your Toy EP.

In for the Kill (Skream's Let's Get Ravey Remix) - Already owned from the In for the Kill Remixes EP. It sounds like a singular toned backtrack, but fits perfectly with the vocals in such a way that it cannot be explained. The last minute is filled with beats. I replaced it with Finally (feat. La Roux) off of Skream's Outside the Box album.

**Into**
This was La Roux's opening album, originally released in 2009. La Roux means approximately "The red one," in French except with the masculine ending on "roux" and the feminine article of "la." This eludes to the gender ambiguous clothing and hairstyles of Elly Jackson, their powerful lead singer. if you go look at their music videos (you should), you will see this, and much more. They have really creative and fun music videos!!

**The Music**
This music is approximately electroclash, but when you compare it to other electroclash bands and soloists, such as Peaches, Amanda Blank, Miss Kittin, Felix and Da Housecats, John B, it is easier listening, higher spirited, less explicit, and less obviously sexual. This means that its popularity was riding less on the draw of the taboo, and more on the musicality and talent of the artists. Elly's vocals are certainly excellent throughout the album. I generally believe the best songs are "In For The Kill," "Bulletproof," and "I'm Not Your Toy," and "Growing Pains, but this is one of those albums where the band got it so right and was so on the money throughout all of the songs that there aren't really any duds here.

The high spirited nature of this music makes it wonderful for listening whenever you are down or depressed. While Elly isn't always singing about puppies, kitties, rainbows, and unicorns here, hopeful sentiment seems to be conveyed throughout most of the lyrics, and in the electronic instrumentals. It seems that it is a realistic sort of optimism that I think many listeners will appreciate. Bulletproof was the most popular song, but the others are certainly not far behind.
