No one knew why the wizard Drakkyn had taken Princess Rowena prisoner, but her desperate father promised her hand in marriage to anyone brave enough to bring her safely home. That, it turns out, was a mistake. If Rowena can escape the wizard's castle on her own—rescuing herself—she will have fulfilled the letter of the pledge, and this loophole in the King's law will grant her the right to her own hand. That is, the right to determine her own destiny, and find her own path to power.

To do this, she will have to navigate the wizard's castle, befriending or defeating his servants as she goes, disable the enchantments holding her prisoner, and finally confront the sinister Drakkyn and force him to release her...all while fending off an increasingly persistent string of “rescuers” eager to claim her and the prize she represents. It's a tall order for someone whose only skills are etiquette and ballroom dance.

But matters are more complicated than even Rowena suspects, for Drakkyn's plans run far deeper than they appear. Princess Rowena is tired of being a plaything for those in power, but she has underestimated the cost of her gamble for freedom: unless she can truly defeat the wizard, she will only trade one kind of imprisonment for another, and Drakkyn will use her to bring the world to its knees.

Honestly, it's a very fun book. As others have noted, it rips into a lot of entirely-deserving tropes, and not just the most obvious ones to go after.

The biggest weakness of it, I think, is that it's a bit too on the nose about doing so. It will never subtly sideswipe or undermine a trope when it can take a good run up and smash into it face first. For that matter, it's not any more subtle about the tropes it's playing straight.

This is intelligent and well written story. The central point of this story is gowth of main character from spoiled princess to somehing else. Her development feels natural and believable. Side characters are intelligent, and they have all distinct personalites.

The quality of writing is at same as Gods Are Bastards, webnovel from the author. If you liked it, you will also like this story. If you haven't read it yet, I recommend it, as it's even better and less traditional fantasy story as this.

Rowena's rescue takes a while to get where it's going but the trip's enjoyable. The story is rich in detail like some other fantasy epics, but lighter than some - there may be some danger, but there's more humor, and most characters in the book are definitely good people.

The characters grow well and believably over the course of the book. I'll be buying the sequel when and if it comes out to see how they develop from here.
