If I could, I'd rate this iron 5 for performance and -5 for construction. I sent the first iron to Rowenta service to get it fixed after 9 months because all the water I poured in the tank went straight into the lower compartment (it sounded like a huge gargle until all the water was suddenly gone) and stayed there until I emptied it, which meant no steam for me. They tried fixing it, sent it back to me, telling me nothing was wrong with it (pretty insulting). Well it turned out it was still defective and it had scratches and dirty fingerprints all over including on the sole itself!!! I sent it back to them AGAIN and they sent me a brand new one last year in August (2015). This year in November, I just came back from an ironing session that ended with a mini explosion I heard on the bottom of the generator, which made me turn it off and get as far away from it until it cools down. I love Rowenta and I trust German products usually but this is the worst of their products. Wished I saved those almost $200!!!
In fact, this makes ironing kind of fun. I usually do touch-ups vertically right on the hanger. The steam is pretty strong and it just steams out the wrinkles. Push that steam button and bamm!! The steam shoots out with a satisfying burst as the wrinkles melt away (of course you wont get a crisp crease this way, you need to use a table for that). Whenever I pick up this steamer I still expect to feel that old heavy iron weight, but then grin at how light this actually is. I cannot imagine any woman not totally loving this (especially receiving one as a gift!).
As to some of the most mentioned complaints here in the reviews- I agree that it would be nice to have an off/off switch, but have learned to live without it. The steam sound does not bother me. It sounds powerful and serious.
ALERT - I know many people read reviews when shopping and making purchase decisions, so I wanted to highlight this info in the review for you. Rowenta has a brand new model, the ROWENTA DG8520. What do you know, it has an on/off switch (the lack of which is the biggest complaint mentioned in these reviews) and a removable water container. It is a bit more expensive, but shop around (available at Williams Sonoma too, under the name "Rowenta Perfect Steam Station").
I hope this info helped.
Update 9/2015- You can now see the listing for the 8520 right here with this one by selecting the purple color version (Up until just recently it was not listed here at all).
In many ways, the DG8430 is similar to the DG5030... great iron, lighter weight in your hand due to design, etc. The main improvement though is the ability to refill water while in the iron is in use and not having to wait for the unit to cool down. I also like how quickly the unit is ready to go within minutes of plugging it in (versus at least 5-10 minutes for the DG5030).
With the DG5030 and facing a large pile of ironing, because it took so long to heat up and cool down for refills, I found myself rationing use of the steam. With the DG8430 you can start ironing almost immediately and use the steam without hesitation. I find that this results in much faster ironing overall. It also has a Calc-Away System, which I have not had to clean yet, to manage calcium build up.
The DG8430 is not without some shortcomings though. I wish it had a power switch. Instead, you have to remember to unplug the unit. Secondly, the unit is a bit loud when it is building up steam, which is an annoyance if, like me, you prefer to watch some TV while ironing. The noise it makes when generating the steam is not too horrible but noticeable and frequent. In addition, there were times when the unit seemed to need to "catch up" before it could generate steam.
Overall though, a nice upgrade to the DG5030 if you are considering it.
+Refill while in use = use steam as much as you want. Great for tackling a large amount of ironing.
+Ready quickly. No waiting for steam to build up like you would have to for the DG5030.
-Cost. Hopefully, it has a long life.
-Noise. Kind of like a compressor sound whenever it needs to build up steam in the internal reservoir.
-No on/off switch. You have to unplug it.
