Editorial Reviews
Comic genius Steve Martin delivers an incredible performance as an engaging small town fire chief who has only one tiny flaw - no, make that one HUGE flaw - his astonishingly long nose. Although he considers it no laughing matter, the hilarity never stops as C.D. Bales (Martin) contends with jerky nose jokes, a bumbling crew of firemen, and his secret love for gorgeous astronomy student Roxanne (Daryl Hannah). Unfortunately, she is attracted to fireman Chris (Rick Rossovich), who's tall on looks and short on conversation. And when C.D. agrees to coach the dumbstruck Chris in his pursuit of the fair maiden, this ticklish triangle dissolves into a hilarious series of rib-tickling romantic misadventures. A contemporary love story of mistaken identity and unrequited love, ROXANNE is an unforgettable comedy that Siskel & Ebert call a comic masterpiece.

First, don't be fooled by the 'retro-VHS-style' designation, it refers only to the packaging: The disc in its standard Blu-ray case comes with an outer cardboard slipcase, cleverly designed to look like an old VHS carton from the late 80s. That's all it means. This edition (at its irresistible bargain price considerably under $10.00!) includes the film only. No fancy special features or Easter eggs. The disc menu is bare-boned and basic, and that's just fine as far as I'm concerned.
Why?
Well, I have loved this movie since first catching a sneak preview the summer it came out (1987). Subsequently, I've owned it on VHS, DVD, and now--best of all!--on Blu-ray. FINALLY! The film has been beautifully re-mastered and presented in true widescreen format, taking the bad taste of that abysmal 1998 DVD with its amateurish pan-and-scan away for good! Every detail (and subtle facial expression) is visible in sharp, vivid resolution--no cut-off heads or blurry edges. And the film is just as delightful as I recall; a clever contemporary adaptation of Rostand's classic 'Cyrano de Bergerac' with ingenious comic twists and a feel-good happy ending, making it one of the most enjoyable summer movies of all time!
Enthusiastically, joyfully recommended!
The movie does a great job incorporating elements of the original play. For example Bergerac was known as being a swordsman so in the opening C.D. takes on two drunks with a tennis racket in a faux sword fight. It’s also got plenty of witty dialogue which again was a characteristic of Bergerac such as when a man insults C.D.’s nose in a bar and then he respond by dealing him 20 insults. Most famously is Chris reciting lines to Roxanne while C.D. is hiding in the bushes telling him what to say.
Steve Martin was perfectly cast in this very endearing romance.

This is an actual Blu-Ray with a cardboard sleeve that looks like the old VHS packaging.
If you're going to get back in the way back machine, then Steve Martin is a reliably choice, and a story modeled off of Shakespeare is typically a pretty good choice too. A little Cirano goes a lot way.
Yes, as a Cirano story, it's predictable, but it's certainly about the journey, not the destination. Martin certainly delivers an experience, and the way they decided to twist it is definitely unique if not inspired.
I'd say this is begging for a reboot, but it's not exactly an original story, and I can't imagine what newer technology would add to it.
That this oafish film renigs entirely, supplanting verbal swordplay and clever canoodling with misogyny and furtive stabs at repellant flirtation, relegates potential viewers to a dim prospect for forgiveness or future date nights
Beautiful film, brilliantly acted.
Now I need to buy another one, just $3 more for the Blu-Ray.
