The Roxant Blackbird is our precision spotting scope that features premium military grade optics in a compact, very usable scope. If you’ve tried our Grip Scope, then you’re familiar with our commitment to quality. Now we’ve put our experience into our Blackbird spotting scope. Whether you enjoy the outdoors, spotting wildlife or involved with law enforcement or surveillance, this scope delivers. The compact, durable scope is versatile, convenient and extremely usable. You’ll enjoy crisp, pure color viewing with TRUE 12-36x50 ZOOM magnification. Our fully multi-coated lens and high grade BAK4 prism guarantee super light transmission and brightness. A Large 50mm objective lens allows an optimal bright, wide angle of view. Our 45 degree angled eyepiece is essential for comfortable viewing, unlike scopes with straight eyepiece which can be inconvenient in most viewing situations. UNDERSTANDING OPTICS 101: Most newbies figure more powerful is better. When it comes to spotting scopes, more powerful is not necessarily better. Why? The larger the magnification, the more jitter, color distortion and loss of definition you will have. Better optics are the key. FACT: Although you may find some scopes that advertise much higher magnifications, many of these claims are pointless. Magnification without definition is useless. Look for the best quality prisms and fully multi-coated lenses. Additional features to look for: retractable eyepiece (not fold down): for use with and without glasses, expandable sunshade for reducing sun glare, it’s not a common feature, but something you’ll wish you had. For convenience, performance and value, the Roxant Blackbird is hard to beat. It packs light and delivers quite a punch. Magnification: 12~36x / Objective diameter: 50mm / Field of view: 52-26M / 1000M / Unit dimension: 232x135x78 mm / Prism categories: BAK4 / Exit pupil diameter: 4.1-1.4mm / MIN. FOCAL LENGTH: 8m

INITIAL IMPRESSIONS : Nice packaging. The carrying case (with scope inside), instructions and tripod are the first things you see when you open the box. The tripod is made of metal with a really tough black coating and when I opened it up on my table, it was super sturdy. No wiggle at all and the rubber feet really locked it into place. The arm that allows you to adjust the angle of the scope has a smooth articulation to it and, when tightened down, secures the scope into place very well. The bag feels like a lightweight nylon but it will absolutely work fine in my range bag to protect the scope from anything that might bust it up in there. Roxant should look into creating am after-market neoprene case for it!
The scope is tiny. As you can see in the pictures, the length of the scope is 9" long and is just under 1lb. 2oz. In the hand, it feels like a quality piece. The dials have just the right amount of resistance and the caps also had the right amount ensuring they wouldn't just fall off on their own. The rubber coating feels of high quality and the matte black finish is clean clean clean. It'd be pretty sweet if they offered it in coyote tan and od green.
PERFORMANCE : I quickly mounted the scope to the tripod and checked out the view across the street. WOW! The image I had of my neighbors dishTV antenna was incredible. That weekend, I took it into Manhattan while visiting my sister and was able to get an incredibly clear image of a building peaking over the top of some trees in central park. You can see in the picture how far I was and I don't have any attachment to connect my phone. I just placed the lens of my phone camera over the view scope and took that close-up shot... that image was crystal clear when viewing properly.
I plan on taking the scope to the range this weekend and will post more pics and an update to my review ASAP.
CONCLUSION : If you're in the market for a range scope, I'd highly recommend this one. The form and function of this product (ESPECIALLY in this price range) is absolutely amazing. While I planned on using this mainly for the range, I could definitely see my self packing it for a day hike with the kids so they can explore our surroundings through the scope during breaks.
Thanks for getting this far. I hope I helped with your buying decision.
I need not have worried, this little Roxant scope performs like a champ. It's close focusing distance is about 21 feet and brings the birds right in close. And the field of view is wide enough to see the entire feeder even at higher magnifications. As far as being powerful enough for seeing targets at 100 yards, the optics are so good that the 36 power maintains a sharp, crisp image that beats many of the 60 power scopes I've seen. I guess the BAK4, fully-coated optics really pay off.
I am really impressed with the quality of construction, the controls are smooth and positive and easy to use. The little tripod is solid and is handy when shooting from a bench. I have a large camera tripod that I use for bird-watching and the Roxant, with its standard camera fitting, screws right on. I've lost several lens caps over the years, and appreciate how this scope has the front cap attached so it's handy and can't be lost.
I research my purchases and agonized over which scope to buy. I didn't want to pay a fortune, but wanted something that would do the job. I know that I made the right choice with this little scope.
It's a great scope! I will recommend this unit to my friends and family, no doubt about it. It's definitely less expensive than other similar units, and has the same feature set. The included instructions were all I needed, and were succinct and to the point. I had the unit assembled and was using the scope within 5 minutes of taking out the box.
It doesn't feel cheap, considering the price point, and the tripod extends fluidly considering how light it is. I like it! The magnification is crisp and clear even at the higher levels, and I was able to easily find and maintain focus with no slippage while panning. I spotted my shots from all three ranges (25, 50, 100 yards) with no difficulty.
I plan to bring this on my hunting trip in November and use it while up in a stand. Previously I used my rifle scope for scanning the area, which was unwieldy, and I think this would be better for that purpose.
Great size and weight! It's smaller than I expected, which is a good thing as it makes it eminently portable. I was able to set up on the back of a 4-wheeler and a box we had for that purpose. Only in tall grass was the tripod a little short, but that's to be expected.
The body and construction are relatively durable - mine suffered a minor scratch to the casing while being handled ruggedly by a friend (tossing into the metal bed of a truck) but it did not affect function at all. I didn't run any higher-endurance tests on it, as I like the unit and this wasn't purchased to destroy.
The casing is very sturdy and other than the scratch (which is very minor) it held up well. The focus ring worked smoothly and cannot be over-rotated with pressure, which is a plus. My friend's scope had a "clicking" dial for focus, and he liked the smooth focus on my Roxant better.
As long as Roxant keeps this around the $90 price, it's a terrific bargain. If it ever falls below that, be sure to snatch it up.
