Platform for Display: Mac Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Toast has been the "go to" application for disk burning on the Mac for many, many years. Over the years, the software has been refined, and been bundled with additional applications. For disk burning, there are only a handful of other options. Mac OS X has built-in disk burning for data disks, and Final Cut X can master DVD's (although it is fairly bare-bones). There is Burn, a freeware application which hasn't been updated in a while.

When I installed Toast, it immediately required an update - which is crucial for compatibility with El Capitan. Auspiciously, the update failed, and I had to go to Roxio's web site and download the update, which installed fine. From there on out, all applications worked (with some issues, read on).

Roxio Toast bundles in 5 applications of varying utility. There is a rudimentary screen capture tool - keep in mind that Quicktime includes the ability to do screen captures as well - plus there are commercial alternatives such as Camtasia and Screenflow which are more fully featured. The one included with Toast is fairly basic. Toast Audio Assistant is a very basic audio recorder with simple editing capabilities. Similar applications have been bundled with Toast for a while now. Audacity is free and more fully featured. I tried recording audio using my Microsoft Lifecam Studio and it wasn't able to record audio. I tested the camera with Quicktime X, which was able to record audio from the web camera, so it's a problem with Audio Assistant. DiskCatalogMaker RE is what it sounds like - an application for making manifests.

Also included is MyDVD, Toast's DVD authoring tool.

I bought this to burn blu rays and paid extra for the added software necessary but it produces blu rays with a staccato pattern that are useless and apparently there isn't any way to prevent it from happening.

Since the August 22 release of Mac OS X 10.10.5, Toast 14 will not burn discs. I have a stack of coasters (blu ray discs are not cheap) that are unwatchable. Even standard DVDs burn as unwatchable, the picture freezing and jerking. Spent two days with Toast tech support and they could not solve the problem, just said to wait for an update to make the program work with Apple. I use this program to burn DVDs for my work. I'm out of business because Roxio/Toast isn't keeping up with the times.

DO NOT UPDATE TO OS X 10.10.5 or you will regret it using Toast (any version).

I received the disk at the end of Jan 2016. It loaded and worked fine but after I subsequently upgraded my Apple OS software to El Capitan OS 10.11.3 the program would no longer work. After multiple attempts to make contact I finally got an answer from Corel/Roxio tech support and they told me how to delete the preferences located in the Library (which having lots of Mac experience I had already tried) and reload the program. That did not work. I further complete deleted the whole program using a app deletion program that locates all the various fragment files connected to the program and deletes them too. I reloaded the program and it opened once then crashed on subsequent attempts to open it. I even downloaded the updated version Toast Titanium 14.1 and it will not work either. The program starts to open then crashes giving an error message about unexpectedly quitting. On the possible chance the old Toast 8 program I still had on my computer was conflicting I deleted it and started over with Toast 14. Same results.
It should be noted that my old Toast 8 program still works fine; even with my new M-disc burner. I primarily upgraded to the 2014 version thinking it would be more compatible with a new M-disc burner I bought. Mostly what I got with the new program was the usual complete change in user format that comes with most upgraded programs that had to adjust to (relearn) and a waste of money.
The manufacturer's customer service is so far useless and unresponsive.

I've owned numerous versions of Toast. Earlier versions were used to transcribe LP's to CD's. I don't know if this version is so bad because of company problems. It allows you to created chapters for slideshows, made in a stand alone slideshow program, but it won't let you name them; it automatically gives them numbers instead. The process of creating chapters is buggy and cumbersome. I downloaded the upgrade and found so many problems that I used Time Machine to revert to the purchased version.
Forget calling tech service. I sent an email with details and they promptly got the details mixed up, giving me info on an earlier version. I finally gave up with them.

Expected an actual upgrade from Toast 11 and wasted $49.00. Old versions of Toast I could transfer cassettes to CDs and all Toast 14 does is crash. Called company and asked for help. When you report their suggestion that doesn't work, you wait for 2 weeks for a reply and then in 2 days they close the report after they finally respond. Then you start all over with someone new. Bet I've had 12 emails back and forth and nothing works since Jan 5th. They don't have a clue on why their program doesn't work and really don't care to test and fix on their end. All my many other programs all work but not Toast. My experience is horrible. I give up after spending hours and hours on this. If you have earlier versions that do work, stay with that. Will never buy another upgrade from Corel.
