5-Star Review from Readers' Favorite
The author, Emily Siskin-Toy, has done a clever job of weaving a story around the premise that what parents want for their children may not always be what they themselves want. Beautifully illustrated by Brian C. Krumm...It would be good for a parent to read to a child, as well as an older child reading alone. --Jane Finch
About the Author
A U.C. Santa Cruz banana slug alum, Emily launched her writing career with posts at various film and television magazines in Los Angeles. After a break in the action to raise her daughter, Emily and her college sweetheart founded WOW! Music Studios, a successful children’s music instruction school in Mill Valley, California. But just like the character in her book, Emily’s true passion was something entirely different; she always dreamed of writing children’s books. Inspiration was everywhere for Roxy Rogers: Your Destiny Is Calling. While coaching her daughter’s youth softball and basketball teams, Emily eventually came to realize that the world of sports was a passion of hers, not her daughter’s, who really wanted, of course, to be a world-famous singer. The plot of the story was right in front of her, and the surrounding details would be cultivated from her lifetime of love for the rich history of Major League Baseball and her daughter’s love of music.

*(There are some 40+ subtle hidden music icons sprinkled throughout the book, clues about what Roxy's true passion is. The kids could not get enough of it! They wanted me to read it over and over again, each time looking for more easter eggs, some real, some imagined. :) )
The art work is incredible - it's got this cool look, like it's an old book from the 40's or something, yet super vibrant at the same time (I LOVE Great-Grandpa Abe - he's hilarious!); but it's the story that gets me.
Kids are under tremendous pressure today to do more than ever and meet others' expectations, often by well-meaning parents who just want the best for their kids. The story gave me a chance to have an honest conversation with my own children about what they wanted to do and what their passions are. To me, this is the seed that reminds kids to dream big and if they stay true to their passion, they'll each succeed in own way.
Thank you, Emily, for writing this book - it's been long overdue! Can't wait for the PBS animated series!
You will not be disappointed in the story and the illustrations, both are lively and well crafted.
