Gr 9 Up—As the bastard daughter of Lord Kent of the Western Province, Tillandra has always lived between two worlds, that of the nobility, where she strives for recognition and acceptance, and that of her stablehand half brother Jax, where she is free to swill wine and run wild. When Princess Lyriana, daughter of the royal family to whom Tilla's father was forced to swear allegiance, disregards social etiquette by sitting at the Bastards Table during a banquet to honor her visit, Tilla is thrown into the company of the model of a perfect royal daughter, along with fellow bastards Zell, a barbarian Zitochi warrior from the north country, and bookish Miles. When this ragtag group of misfits encounter a sinister plot to overthrow the royal family, they are catapulted into a life-and-death mission to save Princess Lyriana, as well as themselves, and rescue the kingdom from an inevitable and bloody civil war. Elements such as magic and deadly mythical creatures will be familiar to fans of the fantasy genre, but the book's hurried plot and crass language paint a confused picture and give the narrative a disjointed feel. The result is a novel that strives to include every possible element of the genre, rather than a captivating fantasy adventure. VERDICT A strictly additional purchase.—Sarah Lorraine, J. She is attending a banquet honoring the visit of the Archmagus and the Princess Lyriana who is heir to the throne. She is in the outskirts, sitting at the bastards' table, with Miles who is the bastard son of the head of House Hempstedt and Zell who is a disgraced Zitochi warrior. Things change quickly when the princess decides that she wants to join the bastards' table. The four kids decide to join Jax later for a trip through the hidden tunnels to the Whitesand beach. There they find themselves an unwilling audience to a coup. Tilla's father, along with Miles's mother and Zell's father, are killing the Archmagus and overhear that Zell's brother has been sent to kill Lyriana in her room.
The five of them have to flee to get word to the king. They head across the country being chased by Zitochi warriors including Zell's brother and other mercenaries too. The face all sorts of adventures along the way. Friendships grow and a romance blossoms too. Then there are losses and betrayals.
Fans of epic fantasy will enjoy this story. The characters, especially Tilla, are well-rounded and intriguing people. I can't wait for the second book in this series to find out what happens next.
All in all, this book would have been a lot better if the writer had workshopped it more and worked with an editor to polish the plot and characterization.

As for my personal thoughts?
I enjoyed this novel. I can't wait to see the next book from this author. He was definitely brilliant with how he constructed a wonderful story. It's about friendship, loyalty, love, and betrayal. Those things are hard to get out of a novel these days. I already ordered a hardcover edition of this. I couldn't help myself. I enjoyed it that much from start to finish. The main character is a fighter and I enjoyed Tilla very much. What are you waiting for? Pick up your copy! This is going in my top five list. Thank you, Mr. Shvarts, I want more from you! Keep up the excellent work! Definitely an author, I plan to read everything from (psst: automatic buy)!
I'm looking forward to seeing more of that in the sequel.
